    Artist History
The Marlins' two founding members, Thom Sears and Jeff Chard, met in high school in Cambridge, Ontario in 1990. Musical influences The Smiths, The Cure and Depeche Mode were the main topic of conversation. Jeff, who was in a band at the time, focused on music as well as on being student body president for that school year. Thom had a keen interest in acting, performed in all the school plays and comedy sketches, hoping for a career in this profession. They both graduated and temporarily went their separate ways, Jeff went to the University of Waterloo to become a teacher, and Thom moved to Toronto to study acting at George Brown then Humber College. Over the next eight years they talked about forming a band, and jammed together on several occasions, compiling a half-dozen songs. In 1992, Jeff joined the band "The Anti-Socials" where he met Shawn Slater, the future drummer for the Marlins . After wrapping up a play in March 2000, Thom contacted Jeff about giving it a proper shot musically. Jeff agreed and the Marlins were born - with Shawn Slater on drums and Jeff's brother-in-law Aaron Telfeyan on bass - a musical veteran in his own right, having played with several Weston-area bands in the nineties. Summer jams in a Kensington coffee house marked the beginning for the band, affectionately named after the plastic swordfish that Thom wore around his neck. These jams were soon followed by electric gigs at Toronto clubs and, in August 2000, the band recorded the seventeen tracks that appear on their debut independent CD "Murky."The release of Murky has been the first completion of a long process of pit stops and changes in the lives of its creators - we hope you enjoy it. The Marlins are currently playing local gigs in the Toronto area at venues such as the El Mocambo and The 360 to support the release of their CD and are looking for label support. For further information about The Marlins, please contact the band at: MarlinsMusic@hotmail.com
