Artist History
Scott Michael, the son of a fundamentalist preacher, grew up around church music. His mother was the church pianist with Scott turning her music pages at the tender age of three. “From as early as I can remember I loved music and performance. I learned to sing next to my mother in church. She had this amazing alto voice and could harmonize with anybody. She even made my dad sound good !” It wasn’t long before Scott joined the family “business,” becoming the star soloist of the church choir and eventually the choir’s director. “I used to write these heart wrenching songs and then soulfully deliver them until there wasn’t a dry eye. I loved moving people with music.”
Eventually becoming an accomplished saxophonist, pianist, percussionist, guitarist and vocalist, Scott Michael discovered his true interest was in electronic music. One summer he and a group of friends followed Depeche Mode around the country. “The synthetic textures and hard driving grooves were so unique. And I loved the way David Gahan was all over the stage. I knew this was the music I wanted to write and perform professionally.”
Saving all his money, Scott Michael bought his first keyboard and began writing and performing his music for church groups, the only venue he’d really ever known. “I don’t think they really understood my new music. Hard beats and edgy lyrics didn’t go over well with the church ladies. They were more accustomed to my gospel performances. But God bless ‘em, they just smiled and let me do my thing.”
Graduation from high school came with a prestigious appointment to the United States Air Force Academy and later military intelligence school. “I decided that I needed to do something for my country before I indulged in a music career. I wanted a college education and the challenge of the Academy was perfect.” Classified missions throughout Latin America gave Scott Michael a taste for the international music scene and influenced his artistry and perspectives on life around the globe. Back in the U.S.A., Scott Michael was assigned as an aide to some of the Nation’s top generals at the Pentagon. “Being an Air Force officer gave me the maturity and educational background to grapple with some pretty difficult topics in my music. I’m thankful for those experiences.” But in the midst of a successful military career, Scott Michael kept writing and performing music. “I couldn’t shake the itch to get up on that stage. It was a part of me and I knew it was time to go for it.”
So, lets say you’re a spy with a cool voice and a penchant for electronic music. What do you do? If you’re Scott Michael, you keep writing killer songs, fire up your recording equipment, hone your craft and move to the songwriting capital of America . . . Nashville, Tennessee. “A lot of people ask me, ‘why Nashville?’ I guess I realized that the heart of good music was good songs. I wanted to write good songs first, then surround them with instrumentation and production. Nashville seemed like the best place to do this. I also wanted to carve out my own unique sound – electronic but still guitar driven, synthetic but with good musicianship – most of all edgy. Plus, have you seen the rents in New York City?”
Scott now pursues his music career on a fulltime basis, writing with Music Row heavy weights and performing all over the region. Most recently, he opened for Kristine W. with a crowd of 5,000 onlookers at the Nashville arena. Several of Scott’s songs are getting consistent radio play on college and dance radio as well. A recent Honorable Mention in the Billboard Magazine New Talent Discovery Contest found Scott in New York City meeting top executives in the recording industry. It was there that he met remixers, producers, and record industry contacts that eventually led to his signing a record deal with Chicago-based Rhodium Records. Scott also recently signed a publishing deal with Peer Music International.
Scott’s upcoming release in the U.S.A on Rhodium Records is a smash hit entitled “Let’s Runaway.” With additional vocals by Pepper Mashay and remixes by Eddie Baez and others, the single is sure to instantly chart on Billboard and DMA charts alike. The buzz is already reaching a deafening level on DJ chat rooms around the nation. With the release set for September 17th 2002, fans and curious onlookers can hardly wait for Scott’s debut. There is also strong interest in the single throughout Europe. In response to the excitement Scott simple says “This is my passion. I can’t wait. Bring it on !!”
