Artist description
Clever, humorous lyrics performed by a pop trio and backed by an all star band. Just enough pedal steel to give it that down home country flava'. It's good fun. |

Press Reviews
RoundSound (3/01) - Your Guide To The Good Stuff - RoundSound is a source for new and recommended music. On the attached pages, RoundSound provides CD suggestions covering many types of music.Three Normal Humans, WEEKEND AT BELLEVUE"I expected to hear chainsaw rock describing a psych-ward retreat, so the sweet harmonies and weepy pedal steel sounds of the title track on this disc were a surprise. The effect is a juxtaposition of message and melody that distinguishes the Humans' sardonic world view. This reminds me of the Kinks best subversive work as lyrics like "people who look like each other have a passion for killing that's second to none" precede a confession of love for "the girl in cell block 3". Twisted stuff sweetly wrapped...the kind ofwork you'll never hear on radio...which is shame, because the Humans have a lot to offer to a music scene long on pretension and short on creativity. Weekend At Bellevue isn't for everybody, but it is uncompromising and extraordinarily clever." themilkfactory (4/01) - Monthly alternitive music news & reviews. themilkfactory focuses on electronica, quality pop and a little bit of world music too.Three Normal Humans, WEEKEND AT BELLEVUE"When Don Shacknai first contacted us a few weeks ago, to ask us if he would review his band's first album, we were quite happy to listen to it, but, having had a look at their web site, we were not so sure that it would fit in with our editorial line. Effectively, when we received the album, it wasn't much what we expected. But we liked it so much we decided that we would talk about it anyway. Three Normal Humans is composed of Don Shacknai, Brian Moran and J.P Kiernan, and, so far, they've mostly been taking their country-pop machine around New York's East Village, occasionally moving to the West Coast, to record. Weekend At Bellevue is a collection of rather unpretentious, refreshing songs. Kicking off with the title track, an upbeat story about a bunch of friends checking into a clinic to have the pleasure of having doctors run psychological tests on them and be paid for it, it is then down to the relationship therapist in I Want To Process With You. The tone change slightly on I Don't Want To Look Like Anyone, a more difficult, and maybe less accomplished, song, lyrically speaking. But the blend of country, American pop and tongue-in-cheek is a winner on most of the album, with really outstanding songs (Weekend At Bellevue, Very Comfortable Chair, Nice or the hilariously hypochondriac Potassium Girl). If at times reminiscent of The Beautiful South when they were clever, Del Amitri or Washington Squares, it is definitely their country roots that dominate this record. They will most categorically never have a go at the "best band in the world" job, or just for a laugh then, and it is rather good news. Weekend At Bellevue is not the best album you've ever heard by far, but it has a great personality, and when things get tough, it will make you smile. And, after all, that's what music is about." |
