Artist History
R.J. Sampson Jr. started writing music at age 6. He took accordian lessons and then progressed to piano and keyboards. At age 14 he began learning the electric guitar. From age 16 to 19 he recorded over 100 songs on his 4-track recorder in his bedroom. In 1989 he played guitar in a band called W.E.A. with Chris Kolp, Rob Crow, and Blake DiDinato. In 1991 he joined a band called Dogtooth Violet which featured John Panagiotis as lead vocals, Nick Mahinis on bass guitar, and Manny Pentzakis on drums. He played lead guitar and sang backup vocals. Dogtooth Violet toured clubs throughout the southeast and recorded their first self titled release. The 4 song demo received airplay on 98Rock, Tampa, FL. Some of the bands highlights were opening for Marilyn Manson in Tampa, FL, winning the Rocket Club's Rock Challenge (in which they competed with 27 other bands). As a prize for winning the Rock Challenge the band used studio time they had won to record their second release Sacrifice. Sacrifice received airplay on 98Rock, Tampa, FL and on 99X, Atlanta, GA. In 1996 the band changed it's name to The Glendi after receiving a letter from the lawyer of another band called Dogtooth Violet. As The Glendi the band played for the Olympic Athletes in the 1996 Olympics, and also opened for the Violent Femmes at the Fox Theater in Atlanta, GA. In 1998 the band split apart. R.J. Sampson Jr. now records on his own in Atlanta, GA. |
