Press Reviews
With On My Way, Houston country singer Lauren Landin debuts a wonderful new album of country tunes that has put her solidly in the running for Nashville’s newest roster of rising stars. Landin’s voice has a deep set, highly melodic quality that belies influences such as Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and especially Dolly Parton. On My Way features Landin taking on several solid tunes written by top Houston songwriters including John Barnett, Lee Garner, Ben Weismann, and Larry Wheeler. On each tune, Landin makes a seductive, cutting vocal take—often managing to be both precise and emotionally charged at the same time. Landin has a way of knowing just how to style a particular lyric to fit precisely the flavor and setting of a song. Listen to her sing Barnett and Weismann’s “I’d Still Want You,” a lovely ballad about the heart-wrenching throes of a young romance. By contrast, Landin enthusiastically embraces the rebellious and upbeat “You Never Listened to Your Mama,” belting out the lyrics with an almost thrilled glee, while never faltering in her vocal delivery. On My Way demonstrates a blooming musical maturity that is truly a rare find in Nashville’s increasingly commercial world. The country scene would do well to pay careful attention to Lauren Landin in the next few years, because, as this album demonstrates, Landin’s talent is not going away. –Alex Arcone, Digital City Austin |
