Colette Lovejoy - The Art of Autumn
    Press Reviews
THE NEW REVIEW AS OF APRIL 18th 2002************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************ Written by Mike Moore******************************** MUSIC EDITOR OF MUSIC CONNECTION********************* Colette Lovejoy Album: The Art of Autumn By Mike Moore Colette Lovejoy is a wonderful, spirited light-rock singer, although there are certainly moments on The Art of Autumn that have some soulful bite as well. It takes just a few seconds of disc opener (A Slow Letting Go) to realize her voice stacks up against most better-known pop divas out there. ( I Cant Cry ) features Fleetwood Mac-inspired melodies and soaring, multi-layered chorus vocals a la the Eagles. ( Gimme Some Time ) adds some dramatic edge with dive-bombing guitar leads and growling vocals reminiscent of Hearts Ann Wilson, while a few choice bars of blooze shuffler ( Voodoo Man ) effectively conjure the ghost of Janis Joplin. Ms. Lovejoy is not the only player on Autumn who has mastered her performance skills. In addition to some above-average songwriting and a sparkling knack for production, Lovejoys husband Chris lays down a number of guitar solos that burn with a 70s classic rock emotion that cant be faked. And for their part, Lovejoys super-tight rhythm section provides solid percussion and inventive but rhythmically precise bass lines that anchor the album accordingly. The unfortunate reality is that very few radio stations that play this kind of music will agree to play new music. Instead of playing something that fuses Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Heart and Janis Joplin, theyd rather just play Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, Heart and Janis Joplin. The audience for rootsy, bluesy, soulful classic rock is curiously hard to pin down, as well. If new artists are to ( break through )with such a tried-and-true sound, they usually have to either be prepubescent, or they must deliver the music in a unique way somehow -- a crazy image, weirdo instrumentation, etc. Im not saying its right, but its going to be tough for Colette Lovejoy to find an enormous audience. The bittersweet reason for this, though, is that shes a meat-and-potatoes musician who relies only on the authenticity of her emotional vocals and the power of her music to connect with listeners. But hey, her music has been listened to 90,000-plus times on the Net -- a medium that is traditionally untraditional when it comes to accepting worthy tune-age -- and hopefully after reading this review, you, too, will give this life-affirming disc a fair listen. ******************************************************************* Modern Electric Blues is an eclectic mix of the old and the new. Colette Lovejoy brings an element of originality to this storied genre. If you were to take Ann Wilson and Bonnie Raitt and wrap them up together with Miss Blue and give them more attitude then a room full of wet cats you would get Colette Lovejoy. Mrs. Lovejoy is a vocalists vocalist. Strong, sexy and demanding of your attention the girl is pure power. Singing in a genre dominated by men Lovejoy blows the doors off the Electric Blues scene. With so much power one would expect her to lack dynamics in her delivery, but she is always in control and understands how and when to use that power. A Slow Letting Go, one of the mellower tunes on her album and very reminiscent of the early work of the Subdudes, showcases the dynamic qualities in this ladys voice. At once soft and tender the next ripe with raw emotion she conveys her message in a way that the listener cannot help but connect on an emotional level. What Ms. Lovejoy does is so much more then just sing she has a uniquely wonderful gift, she paints beautiful sonic and aural landscapes with her melodies. To truly appreciate the power of Lovejoys vocals one only need listen to Give Me Some Time. This smooth rocker showcases the raw power of Mrs. Lovejoy with no less then four, 10-second sustains at full volume. Not only does she exhibit her exceptional breath control here but also her tonal quality never falters even as she slides off the note to end the phrase. Lovejoys upcoming freshman release The Art Of Autumn will be making its presence known on store shelves soon. With a little help from a strong promoter this album, which is as well produced as any Indie product on the market today and features the incredibly skilled yet tasteful guitar work of husband Chris Lovejoy could be spinning in commercial radio stations across the country as well. 2002 promises to be a year of stellar Indie releases and The Art Of Autumn may well prove to be one of those that sit on the top shelf in the critics CD collections along side the albums of those who inspired her in this business. The time has come for Mrs. Lovejoys heroes to become her contemporaries. Bobby Bensley Java Music A&R 12-31-2001-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Reviews FROM FANS Colette Lovejoy"New Millenium"If you're tired of modern pop or electronica, check out Colette Lovejoy's brand of stylish R & B. This is relaxing music, songs for cozy sweaters and a lazy Sunday afternoon. The multi-tracked vocals and lush music reminds me of Burt Bacharach, while the vocals aren't like anything appearing on my personal radar. Colette deserves credit for spicing up the song with a searing guitar solo. This lady can really sing, and she's not afraid to show it! The chorus is full of energy, and had me bopping along to the beat. And I don't usually care for R & B. 03/19/01 Music Reviews [] New Millenium :Very good mix and production. Sounds like spiritual pop to me.Very good vocals with a lot of overdubbing and harmonies. Very original melody, doen't sound like anything I've heard. "Station Review" Send Me Somebody" sounds like it should be picked up by a Major Motion Picture for its soundtrack. It Vocally and Lyrically evokes images to mind of a rapturous tale of star crossed Lovers. Collettes' masterful vocals and the clever crafting of this tune elevate its standard into being worthy of enourmous mainstream acceptance. As a vocalist, Colette reminds me of Jan Arden, and I enjoyed the "light and shade" in her singing, she alternates skillfully and effortlessly between sweet, subdued tones and powerful soaring, and passionate vocal phrasing. It might be Time for Hollywood to produce another Blockbuster Romance film and this is the song for it! COMMENTS FROM STATION VISITORS *** Colette Lovejoy, first, the song is something that has kind of hit quality in the sense that it keeps in your mind after you heard it. (her other stuff is fantastic too! Colette's voice is pure honey . . .Check Louisiana Love song. . ."you were my lover, I was your sacrifice. . ." This is a real woman singing . . .She's in-the-know,her voice is pure, pich right-on,does skillful, artful turns with her singing and writes - it seems, prolifically. I had listened to Colette before she was on this station. After I first heard her songs I thought this is one of the best female singers I've heard on mp3 and I had heard a lot. You can tell she just has that little something extra which sets her apart from most singers. Also her lyrics are very good and she puts a lot of heart and emotion into the words when she's singing them. Keep on rockin' and singin' Colette! "Send Me Somebody" is a prayer sung by a passionate Angel. I am overwhelmed with the talent on this station. Colette is a prime example of a voice that is comfortable in the beautiful realms of singing and the expressive realms of emotion. I am sure that the story I hear in this song is an autobiography of true experience and I am drawn into the story as if I was a character in the story. Once again another voice that you can't help but fall in love with, the instant you hear Colette sing. God bless you Collette for reaching in so deep with no fear. The third time around and I get chills, something that doesn't happen too often . Hi Colette ! You have such a beautiful voice. It reminds of Ann Wilson from Heart. I have tears in my eyes listening to you. Keep up the great work. I look forward to hearing more of your music. The first time I heard Colette's voice, I immediately fell in love with it. It's so clear and those high note, wow. "Send Me Somebody" is a anthem for all those lonely souls out there looking for love.
