    Artist History
Cleaver Smith & Swenson first came together in 1983 in Carrboro, North Carolina. Bill Cleaver, Robert Smith and Joe Swenson, form the core of the group coming from diverse backgrounds in science and a passion for music since early childhood. "We soon realized there were as many musical styles here as band members" As they began to develop their own material, they were drawn towards an organic blend of folk/pop/country with an acoustic instrumental sound that emphasizes strong vocals, with music and lyrics that come from the heart. Arrangements usually center on two acoustic guitars, lead vocal with two part harmonies. Electric bass and synthesizer complete the mix. The addition of David McKnight to the group brought a whole new direction and dimension to the music. David, an experienced fiddle player, joined during a break between sets at the former Ninth Street Bakery in Durham NC where he literally walked-in off the street and asked to "sit-in". Karen Nicholson added her energy and vibrant violin to the group a year later. Other local musicians also joined them on stage from time to time. One such seasoned musician, David Spencer, offered his Guitar, Banjo, Dobro, and Clarinet, as finishing touches to many of their songs. When Joe moved to Tennessee in 1986 they continued to write new music and play regularly up until he moved to California in 1989. After several years apart from each other and the music, they have joined together again to play and record some of their original songs. The album title and song of the same name speaks to this reunion, of life’s uncertainties, and the need for taking chances. "Back Home Again is coming home to North Carolina, coming home to be with friends, and coming home to the music we love".
