Artist History
Rumour has it there was a full moon when singer/songwriter Ryan Hauschild and guitarist Lanny Hussey, both from EMI’s Ginger, drummer Robbie Watkins of Handsome Boy/BMG’s Slowburn, and bass guitarist Tony Kerr formed Winston. Between them, they have recorded ten records, appeared live on MuchMusic, Shaw’s Urban Rush and Citytv’s BreakfastTelevision, filmed six music videos and toured Canada dozens of times. This powerful combination is an exceptional blend of musicians and songwriters set to explore new levels of sound and avant-garde song construction.
Rock fans praying for some depth in today’s clone rock scene find their wishes granted with Winston. Providing an escape from the everyday, the group’s songs “Love it Up and Fell” and “Bottom of the World” create worlds unto themselves with a rich and unique blend of melody and harmony. The songs are both delicate and innovative, luring listeners in with tantalizing rhythms and solid guitar lines before engulfing the audience with thick energy driven choruses.
Radio stations across Canada and the US have picked up on the group’s innate ability to capture and cultivate audiences. Most recently, the single “Love it Up and Fell” hit # 1 at rock radio station The Q in Victoria. The song spent 15 weeks in the Top 10 at CKKQ and received substantial airplay on 15 test market stations. With radio fully integrated and responsive to the Winston sound, the band recently won a major FACTOR loan to record their debut album. Working with Juno award-winning producer John Webster (Bif Naked, Templar), the group is set to release their first full-length album, Passengers, spring 2003.
Each member worships different musical influences, but together they create a compelling sound that’s much more than the sum of its parts. Whatever you call it, the result was Winston’s 2001 critically acclaimed pop/rock EP My Fix – an album of hook-filled, harmony laden guitar rock anchored by what Indie Music Director Trace Ventura of Vancouver’s 99.3 The Fox calls a “truly unique and truly spectacular voice.”
Pop Music critic Kerry Gold of the Vancouver Sun says Winston is a joy to see live. After giving the band’s debut EP, My Fix, a four-star review, Gold went on to include the independent release on her list of favorite CDs of 2001. Winston was one of only two Vancouver-based bands to receive an honorable mention on a list dominated by chart-toppers Radiohead and the Strokes. With a growing army of fans and supporters, Winston is now poised to explode into a driving force behind an emerging new music sound and community.
