Press Reviews
Viacheslav"VP"Preobrazhenski/Day By Day. A new label for a leader previosly unknown to me, although he has apparently had two previos CDs under his name for ather labels.Hi is a Russian by birth but a long-time resident in Sweden where he has played with all the top resident and visiting jazzmen, which is not suprising given the quality of his playing here. His tone is the thing of beauty delivered smoothly with the emphasis in all the right places; I suppose Eddie Miller or perhaps Bob Cooper are the nearest to his style although it is clear he is copyng no one. His melodic invention, too, is of the best quality, especially good on ballads such as I Fall In Love Too Easily and I`ll Close My Eyes. The rhythm section supports well and pianist Skuba provides noticeable solos on Eastline Blues and For You,For Me, For Evermore in two different styles, the first driving and two fisted the second lyrical and flowery. With my inbuilt prejudice against "one horn" quartets, I can`t wax too lyrical about this, but it is very good of its kind and deserves attention by funs of good tenor playing; another melodical horn player alongside him and I am sure I would have raved about the issue, and even as it is, taken a couple of tracks at a time it`s very enjoyable.
