Artist History
"Ska/Punk with a difference" read the poster for the packed gig at the Exeter University Lemon Grove. Filling such a venue in such a town was no mean feat, a place populated by students usually only interested in cheesy pop or Travis sound-a-likes. The BIG's uncompromising mixture of ska, punk, folk and blues rock has been turning Exeter's music scene upside down, and now they are doing the same in London! The BIG were formed in Exeter by frontman Eddie Rome, bassist David Worsley and drummer Jim Allan just over a year ago, shortly to be joined by trumpeter Gary Beckley, saxaphonist Eleanor Robinson and mandolin player Richard Crussel. After several successful pub gigs, they were soon playing the town's more reputable venues such as the Cavern and the Phoenix, both supporting touring acts and headlining their own shows. They have featured regularly in all the student media in Exeter, their set not only being packed with great music, but an on-stage presence that inspired headlines such as "The funniest band I have ever seen...absolute madness".In March they recorded an 11 song CD, entitled "Listen". One of the songs from this album, "Nil By Mouth" spent 2 weeks at Number 1 on University Radio Exeter. Following that they have held the Number One spot in peoplesound.com's ska chart for a number of weeks with the song P.S.A very successful year was rounded off by an appearance supporting Jools Holland and his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra at the Exeter University Summer Ball.Since the Summer they have played a number of gigs at London Venues such as the Rock Garden, The Half Moon, The Garage, The Red Eye and more. |
