Artist History
Singer/Songwritter Cody Lee Dopps of Denver, Colorado has been
passionate about music since a few hours after his birth. Growing
up beneath a piano, he quickly developed a habit of composing
short songs and reworking, and vastly improving, a number of
Beethoven's sonatas. Shortly after a court order removed him from
high school he co-founded an Agro-funk-glamrock-dixieland band
called Andrea's Winter, which became quite popular with
members of Denver's criminal fringe, but was coolly received by
both the popular musical press and the managing board of the
Denver Dumb Friends League.
Cody's relationship with music has always mirrored his
relationship with the ladies, many of whom refer to him as
"Hit'n'Run Dopps". His playing styles take on the sense of
someone who has absorbed the cultures of many world cities and a
lot of that juice you get when you make ramen noodles. He is, and
always has been, remarkably absorbent. His "music" is described
as "Math Rock" by some, and "a deliberate threat to public
morality" by others. It is, put simply, a blend of acoustic pop, lo-fi
rock, unearthly sick-cat wailing, with a touch of country and a
smidgen of grape jam. It's Buddy Holly meets Elvis Costello for
lunch at One Potato Two in the Southwest Plaza food-court. Of
rock.
Playing with one's self on an empty stage might seem a bit
unnerving, especially for a member of the audience, but in the time
that Cody has been playing as a solo "musician" he has gained
enough confidence (and vast sums of weight) that he's on the right
track. Just in the last year Cody has broken into the music scene,
two cars and a deli, and is yet to be arrested. He has performed at
The Bluebird Theater, The Gothic Theater, The Flying Dog
Brewery, several poorly-lit coffee houses, a crooked old-folks
home, in the housewares section of Big Lots (formerly
MacFrugals), a few local radio shows as well as an opportunity to
play his song "Your Blue Satellite" live on KMGH Channel
Seven's 4AM agriculture report.
Cody is sure to find a well deserved audience, even if he has to go
to someone else's show to see them. His debut EP
Trajectory/Interference "is unintelligible, poignant and reveals
the depth of Dopps psychosis", says Juggs Magazine in their
December 6th, 2001 issue.
