Artist History
Denise began singing where many other musicians have had their beginnings, at church, in the Albany, NY area. Throughout her teens, she sang and played guitar weekly with the church band and often sang at friend's and family member's weddings. At the age of 15, Denise started writing and arranging her own songs, which she performed solo or backed by the band. After leaving the church and concentrating on college studies, Denise put her music on the backburner until 1995 when she returned to songwriting. Two years later, she and friend Gina Shahinian began performing at local clubs and cafés, quickly filling their schedules with performances. In early '99, Denise performed on a local music television show, Sounding Board, and her music began to get noticed by the media and the public as well. She began performing on local radio and television and her listener base began to grow. In May '99, Denise's song Fly was chosen as "MP3 Single of the Month" by CRUMBS, the Albany area's top on-line music resource. In August '99, her web site was chosen by CRUMBS as their "Cool Site of the Month". A live radio performance of her song Awry on one of the Albany area's highest rated morning shows, "The Don Weeks Show", was chosen for their "Best of Don…So Far" compilation CD. Denise is now performing all over the region with her new band, and has just released her much-anticipated debut CD, love and understating. The CD features Denise's acoustic guitar and her passionate and melodic vocals with the backing of her talented band- guitarist John Snyder, bassist Matt Bombard, and drummer Mike Iula. |

Press Reviews
"Denise Culhane has quietly been becoming one of the area's leading singer-songwriters..." - CRUMBS (Capital Region Unofficial Musician and Band Site) http://www.crumbs.net/" ...on a recent episode of the Time Warner cable series Sounding Board, Culhane sang thoughtful numbers marked by upbeat melodies, clever wordplay and the gentle, un-flashy expressiveness of her voice." - Peter Hanson, Metroland Magazine http://www.metroland.net/ "One of the mornings that really impressed me was when two young ladies walked in the studio, sat down not five feet from me...one of them had a guitar, the other one had just a little percussion instrument, and there was this incredible blend of voices that made just wonderful, marvelous music…" - Don Weeks, radio show host http://www.wgy.com/weeks/ "On the local scene you will see independent stars rise as well. My buddy and I were at the Troy Pub and Brewery...and were impressed with the voice of Denise Culhane who was performing with her friend on stage...She is currently producing her own CD and it should do well. She has a great voice and talent for writing lyrics." - Don Rittner, author and publisher of The Mesh-Inside Cyberspace magazine http://www.themesh.com/ |
