Artist History Mixing the old with the new is a common theme for hard rock outfit Diamond Back, hailing from Canada’s capital, Ottawa, Ontario. The sound is definitely progressive, as it has elements of older styles reminiscent of Metallica, to newer elements suggestive of Tool or Dream Theater. The theme continues with their young front man Greg McLaughlin. Currently only 18, he has been able to turn industry heads with his vibrant songwriting and play the guitar like it was what he was born to do. McLaughlin is supported by his older brother Liam on drums, Derek Feltmate on guitar and Dave Bessner on bass. The dream started for Diamond Back in 1997, as the older McLaughlin and schoolyard buddy Feltmate decided to do a typical suburban activity and put together a band. Little brother Greg begged and pleaded to be in the band. After getting tired of saying no, the three formed their first attempt at a band, called Bassbored. The trio found bass players here and there, and played typical punk/alternative rock. Quickly realizing that there was much more out there, they decided to adopt a more challenging style that evolved into the sound they have today. After a long drawn out search for a bass player, they came across Bessner who fit in with the band’s groove immediately. Now as a complete unit, the band has completed work on the Submission maxi single, which includes tracks Mortar and White Stains. "Music can be looked at as a spectrum," says front man Greg McLaughlin, "There's art and creativity on one side, and business on the other." Being able to focus on the creative side is a bonus, and shows in the work. The songs are not only dynamic and interesting to listen to, but have deep undertones lyrically.
