Guitar Magazine/August 1999 ~~~~ Guitar-playing singer-songwriters who can't decide whether they prefer to wail on guitar or belt out soulful vocals will find salvation in this powerfull debut record by Dave Mendenhall, who can do both equally well, and writes great guitar grooves to boot, He sings, writes, and plays, and cannily enlists the lead talents of stellar guitarists Seymour Duncan(yes that Seymour Duncan) and Neale Heywood. From the power-pop "On the Air Tonight" to the Sting-cum-Gabriel-ish " Its All Over Now" Mendenhall's vocals exude drive and soul. He even sings with enough drive and authority to pull off such ambitious and well-heeled covers as "All Along the Watchtower" and "When a Man Loves a Woman" Here, his voice soars (and Duncan positively burns), embodying the best of Michael Bolton, but with more grit and soul (think Bolton meets Paul Rodgers). Mendenhall's great skill is the equanimity with which he treats guitars in his song arrangements, both for solos and fills as well as intricate texures that underpin the grooves. A classic example of this-melding the best elements of songwriting, voacal execution, and integrally woven guitar-based arranging is "Turn of a Card" It's even got a vibe that is vaguely reminiscent of Del Shannon, which in my book is just fine. -Jon Chappell/Guitar Magazine ~~~~~~~~~ Dave's Comments:working with such brilliant people like Seymour, Pete, Neale and Dane. They bring so much feel into a session. Like "Turn of a Card" All of the guitar ideas came from the brain of Seymour Duncan. I feel really lucky to work with people like these guys. Dave |
