Artist History
Since January 2001, The Golden Dogs have developed an enthusiastic fan base, playing to packed venues throughout Toronto. Though this mangy pack is furiously digging up post-rock's back lawn, they've got their hind legs firmly planted in the fertile soil of eighties and nineties alternative. The result? Manic rhythms meet catchy melodies and colourful tonal explorations melt into poppy anthems. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Now they've captured this playful yet intelligent vibe on their self-titled debut CD. While songs like Birdsong and Elevator Man explore the simplicity of the three-chord arrangement, others like Don't Make a Sound meld together the conflicting energies of two songs, consummating the happiest musical shotgun wedding around. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * The Golden Dogs celebrated the launch of their self-titled CD at the city's venerable Cameron House on Wednesday, July 3, 2002. |

Press Reviews
"Combining art rock roots with a post-rock temperament, The Golden Dogs craft quirky, occasionally dissonant pop music that should appeal to fans of Wilco, XTC or local Tim McCarroll-Butler. While the Toronto quintet--Dave Azzolini (guitar, lead vocals), Michael Chambers (guitar, vocals), Micah Goldstein (bass), Adam Warner (drums) and Jessica Grassia (keyboards, vocals and percussion)--formed in January of 2001, they come off as seasoned veterans on disc, and have won a reputation for a rambunctious stage show." --Ric Taylor, View Magazine * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * "On their first recording, a six-track CD EP, Sting's early, strangulated vocal style inevitably comes into play occasionally, but the Golden Dogs also dip into roots rock. I Don't Sleep sounds like a tribute to the fine, marble-mouthed vocal chops of Blue Rodeo's Greg Keelor, with Azzolini's drawl leading the band through the song's catchy but soporific changes. Then again, Azzolini swears it was listening to Pink Floyd's Fat Old Sun from Atom Heart Mother that inspired him to capture that languid summer's day feel. The CD's final track, The Elevator Man, an ode to the man who shepherds tourists up and down the hotel all day, crosses the high-strung early Police with Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass." --Bill Reynolds, Hamilton Spectator |
