Artist History
Down-to-Earth Approach was formed in upstate NY in May 2000 by ex-members of The Burns- Jonathan Lullo, Ryan McClurg, and Peter Metzler. On bass, they enlisted lifelong friend, and former guitarist of the MFA, John McCampbell, because of his unique approach to song structure and melodic discord. DTEA recorded their first demo only a month after forming, which would later be entitled: "Sad Songs to Sadly Miss You By". The five-song demo was produced and recorded by Dan Bess at Dungeon Studios in Corfu, NY.
The rest of the summer would serve mainly as practice to refine the band's sound. In September, singer/guitarist, Jonathan Lullo, left to study music management at William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. Drummer, Peter Metzler, and bassist, John McCampbell departed to SUNY Purchase in Purchase, NY for their second year of study in recording and sculpture respectively. Due to the distance between the members during college, especially with Ryan at home in Batavia, playing shows was near impossible. However, they managed to squeeze out another five-song demo in January 2001, which would later be released on RUT Records, named "I Won't Walk Away From This". DTEA tracked and mixed the songs at Buffalo, NY's Starfields Studios with Kevin Bruchert. The recording was then taken to be mastered by Alan Douches (Saves the Day, Hot Rod Circuit, the Promise Ring) at West West Side Music in Tenefly, NJ.
The Space between shows took its toll on the band, and by may 2001, they decided not to return to college in the fall, but to relocate to Los Angeles in order to devote their full attention to their music. The summer was spent rehearsing and opening for the likes of The White Octave (ex Cursive), Coheed and Cambria (then known as Shabutie), Goldfinger, Holy Angels (ex Buried Alive and Enkindles), and As Friends Rust. They also released "I Won't Walk Away From This" at the end of July, and had sold over 200 copies by September.
At the end of the summer, John, Ryan, and Jonathan moved to Los Angeles with Peter following in January. They practiced for four straight months without playing any shows to develop the sound that became more and more their own. In July of 2002, DTEA went into Kingsize Sound Labs with producer Dave Trumfio (The Anniversary, Wilco, Koufax) and recorded 3 songs for promotional use. Down-to-Earth Approach is currently rehearsing and writing new songs for a full-length album. |
