Press Reviews
"Soundshack" Band: Soundshack Label: Self-released Release date: 2001 The art of writing an intricate yet listenable song is no longer at the forefront ofcontemporary popular music. Fortunately, some musicians still recognize that a good song ismore important than tight abs and thong-th-thong-thong-thongs. State College's own Soundshack is a band dedicated to performing high-quality songs, and the group's self-titled debut CD lives up to that goal. Formed in September 2000 by songwriter Phil Doucette, Soundshack has played throughout central Pennsylvania including a regular slot at The Brewery in State College. Soundshack is the Dave Matthew's Band on a jam-less day and the Wallflowers without a veil of sadness. Doucette's songwriting is focused, consistent and quite good. He communicates his ideas efficiently not only lyrically, but through compositional structure as well. The themes of Doucette's songs are nothing new but are simply effective, with enough subtle accents to entertain even the most discerning listener. The standout track is "Question," asong with a great melody, hook and message. I'm reminded here of Paul Simon who rarely hits listeners over the head with a song but instead lets them absorb iton their own terms. That holds true throughout the CD. This solid collection of rock songs can be enjoyed exclusively for each track's feel or on a more intellectual level. Doucette provides thesoundtrack for a personal journey, without dictating the destination. Doucette sings all of the vocal parts on the CD, which required numerous overdubs. Theharmonies and contrapuntal lines add a great deal of depth to the band's sound, and Soundshackwould be well served by adding another vocalist for its live performances. A bigger issue though is Soundshack sounds more like a collection of musicians than a band. Admittedly, the group's members have been playing together for only a few months, but the lack of unity in their sound is troubling. This has nothing to do with musical "tightness" (the drummer John Stover and bassist Bart De Jonghe are locked in nearly all of the time) but more with the aesthetic of the music. The disc sounds more like a well-produced songwriting demo than a full-band effort, which makes for a somewhat unsatisfying listening experience. Soundshack is a good rock band with a good rock CD and fans of the aforementioned artists should enjoy it a great deal. Plus, there's much to look forward to for the band's future. As Soundshack continues to rehearse and perform, it is likely that the band will develop a cohesive unity. And should it sustain the quality of its songwriting, Soundshack will give fans something to listen to and think about. Rating: 3 1/2 (out of five) By Matthew Ascah, for the Times |
