Artist History
Matt Ruggles has been honing his acute ear for good music since he was very young. One of his earliest favorite songs was "Iron Man." His dad would play the record for him before he was even enrolled in Kindergarten, and Ruggles still remembers he especially liked the silly "I am Iron Man..." introduction, but then also liked the music that followed. When he was in second and third grade, his dad introduced him to bands like The Ramones and The Sex Pistols. Later, again with the guidance of his dad, he graduated to the more advanced stylings of The Who, Jimi Hendrix, and Cream. Some of his favorite songs as a youngster included, "I Can See for Miles," "Like a Rolling Stone(Live at Monterey Pop)," and "Sunshine of Your Love." Once in high school, Ruggles discovered live music. It wasn't the heaviest band around, but a Bang Tango show opened Ruggles' eyes to the world of live rock and roll. It was this cheesy little event at a cheesy little venue that changed his perspective of music. He says, "I had never really considered the fact that all the awesome music I loved was being played by people. I didn't know that just anybody could go out and get a guitar, and with enough practice, make those awesome sounds." Ruggles got a guitar and started practicing as often as possible. He had a friend who took guitar lessons. Ruggles would be at his friend's house, sometimes before his friend had even returned, to find out what his buddy had learned at the lesson. He dabbled in the realm of playing live. He would convince a couple guys to play drums or bass on a keyboard while he pounded out power chords on his guitar, but those early attempts at music were usually painful to the ear, yet always amusing. Those sessions gave him a taste of what it might be like to really play a show. In college, he convinced a drummer friend from high school to come out and join him at CSU and start a band. The two of them worked well together, but they had a rough time finding a bass player. Ruggles says, "One time I was trying to help a guy get his bass in tune, and when I reached over, his bass gave me a painful jolt of electricity. That incident basically summarizes our attempts to find a bass player." Ruggles recruited his younger brother to play the bass for them, and the three played extremely well together. They called their threesome, "Puddle," and were invited to play a small number of house parties. As far as hazy memories can recall, the shows were excellent, but their time as a band was short lived. All three members would graduate college at different times, and the prospects of earning livings and other changes sent them each down their own path. Ruggles says he thinks the band certainly would have been more successful if they had all gotten together earlier and had more time together. The drummer moved to California. His brother is now working on becoming a veterinarian, and according to Ruggles - is a very accomplished guitar player. Ruggles spent the next five years working as a photographer, reporter, and newsroom manager for various television stations. Still, he spent most of his free time playing guitar, listening to music, or going to shows. His persistance has paid off with a record deal with Double-Hit Daredevil Records in Boulder, Colorado. "It's a dream come true," says Ruggles. "It's like having your cake and eating it too - which is a strange cliche', since if you have your cake, why the heck wouldn't you eat it? Anyway, I have a great set-up with my record company that lets me put out what I like, supports my efforts, supplies me with a superb producer, and believes in what I'm persuing." The new CD, "1", is full of basic power crunch riffs with all the hooks and lines we've been waiting for. This CD finally provides metal fans with a whole disk chock full of pure metal pleasure. |
