Review of debut track Venus In A Smile:OK, here's the deal :There's been a lot of talk lately about whether eJay is a credible tool for making unique and professional tracks with. Too much, maybe. I reckon I could've settled that whole debate with four words : "Venus In A Smile" !From it's intriguing opening with spaced spheres for a classic feel, right to the end, you know you're listening to a grand and original tune. This is the best mix I've heard in ages. The kick drum is very subtle and sounds like a heartbeat... the whole affair is very, very sensual. Some ethereal sounding piano floats over it, and then the rhythm cuts in. What an original rhythm too! There's a lot I like about this track. Number One is that it sounds classic without being derivative. That's no mean feat on Jat's part...Now this might sound a bit crass, but I spent quite a bit of my life involved in marketing, and if I were advertising something (shampoo, fragrance, holiday destination, exotic liqueur, anything), I'd be phoning Jat and offering whatever sum would let me use "Venus In A Smile" for my ad. It would make it a winner!Number Two reason I like this piece is that it's a PERFECT exercise in sample placement and mixing. Levels are just right (I must learn how they all do that!), and the overall construction is superb. Criticism? I can only offer this : When the vocal sample comes in during the breakdown, it kinda took me by suprise. That bit could have been more subtle. During the main part, I'd have utilized it more, though. This song is amazingly good. And I'd challenge anyone, even the most jaded eJay sample freak, to have guessed it was made with eJay. You'd never know! Damn this is a good track! It's a very classy, sensual, dreamy piece of work that would sit proudly in any record collection. Everyone who reads this : Give it a listen, just so you know what can be done Oh, and Reason I Like This Track Number Three : I'm playing it to my girlfriend later. I figure "Venus In A Smile" will make me very very lucky tonight |
