Artist History The band zalex was founded in February 2000 on the ruins of the band Obscene where Alexey Zhukov (vocals, guitars) and Roman Shmelev (drums) had played. Dmitry Kezhvatov (guitars) and Andrey Seleznev (bass) joined the new band. The musicians have established their musical priorities which were based on works of Faith No More, the Cure, the Pixies, Muse, Placebo, Voivod, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Depeche Mode and many others. A demo-tape had been made already in May and in November the musicians started recording of their first album "Hope of Unknown" at SNC studio. This record was sound-engineered and produced by Evgeny Trushin. Recorded tracks were placed in Internet for free download but by some different reasons the album was not officially released. By virtue of Internet hundreds of people from different countries could listen to the band's music and thus zalex began to win hearts of its first fans. The band gave its first concert in November 2001 and since spring of the next year zalex began its intensive concert activity. In June 2002 the musicians started to record their new album at Asator studio. After all instrumental tracks were recorded the band members decided to take a little rest and to continue the studio work in September. In autumn 2002 there has happened some line-up changes in the band. In September bassist Andrey Seleznev left the band. Dmitry Lobanov took his place. In October a singer Yuri Maltsev joined zalex and in November Roman Shmelev left the band. In a month Nickolay Kozaev took his place on drums. In connection with these events the musicians continued their work on the album much later than it had been planned before. Only in April 2003 zalex had managed to finish the studio work on its new self-titled album. At that time musicians decided to publish the CD unassisted and to support the free music ideas. May 1 the album was published under the terms of the EFF Open Audio License. It means that the rights to freely access, copy, distribute, modify, create derivative works from, and publicly perform all or individual tracks from this album for non-commercial or commercial purpose are irrevocably and perpetually granted if the conditions of the license are met. Small Web site, MP3 versions of the songs and graphic files required for reproduction of all elements of the album's design were placed on the CD. In addition all tracks from the album were made available for free downloads from Internet.
