Artist description
A "band" in the broadest sense of the word, The Second Self is more a collective of friends that like to record music together. Led by Hoboken, NJ-based singer/songwriter Ray Ecke, The Second Self's 11-song debut CD, "Souvenir," is the result of two years worth of home recordings. With influences ranging from Todd Rundgren to World Party to The Beatles to Paul Westerberg, The Second Self's music defies easy categorization. Songs like "Everything's Alright" and "Another Loser Love Song" are pure pop, others like "Tidal Wave" with its 'Aerosmith meets Steely Dan' groove; and the Santana-esque percussive feel of "Where We Live," reflects the kind of diversity few artists seem to achieve. However, what ultimately ties "Souvenir" together is the combination of catchy, thoughtful songs recorded with energy, passion and fun. |

Artist History
Prior to forming The Second Self, Ecke played acoustic guitar and wrote songs for the acclaimed New Jersey-based power-pop band Say Uncle!. Both drummer Terry Farley and guitarist/keyboardist Rick Bustamante, who both co-produced 'Souvenir' and performed on the tracks, were also members of Say Uncle! The band broke up in 1997 after three years together. In addition to working with The Second Self, Bustamante is also a solo artist. Many of his songs, including his children's record (also featuring Terry Farley on drums) "Jelly Jams for Teddy Tuggers," are available on MP3.com, (check out our links page). Also contributing to greatly to The Second Self is guitarist/bassist Chris Sokolowitz.
