Artist History
Born With a Tail began as a fun recording project started by Justin Brown in September 1999. He recorded the songs "Entrance Theme" and "Crash Landing" as 4-track demos. Armed with these demos, he tried to find other people to play with, and form a proper band. Once that didn't work, he continued playing all the instruments on the recordings, until one day when his brother Jared wandered downstairs and sat behind the drumkit. Already a talented guitarist and bassist, Jared's drumming skills improved and the two began to write new songs together. He learned some of Justin's old songs and Justin began playing drums on songs Jared had written. Eventually they were both recording tons of songs together and individually, showing their individual tastes and talents as well as their collective efforts. In 2001, they released BWaT's first recording, "Born With a Tail". After playing a few shows and getting the word out, Steven MacLauchlan and PJ Sykes joined the band. After a few shows, PJ decided to leave the band and Matt Higginbotham replaced him on Bass guitar. With this lineup, the 4-piece toured the East Coast for the first time in December 2001, and quickly did it again in March 2002. Shortly thereafter, they recorded and released "The Gravest Suspicion", which documented the bands transition from a 2-piece to a 4-piece. Following up with a Summer 2002 tour of the south-east, the band continued to play shows as often as possible. March 2003 saw the band embark on a North East tour with pals [The] K Word. After a long haul, Justin decided to retire from the BWAT biz after recording "Clown Funeral", an EP which documents the songs written after "The Gravest Suspicion". Shortly thereafter, Chris Howe stepped in to play drums, and completed his hazing process in record time. |
