from The Wooster Daily Record, March 5th, 2000: "21st Century Punk: Brain Sample Rocks" By ANDREW TONN Staff writer WOOSTER - It is quiet as you pull your car around behind the Super 8 Motel on the south side of town. The parking lot of the Gemini Lounge is dark except for the neon red glow of beer signs in the small windows of the otherwise faceless building. You step from your car onto the ground and the first thing you hear is silence. As you walk closer to the door, you feel the music before you hear it. The vibration suggests it might be 1976 and you're in Soho to see a Pistols show; or perhaps 1985 and you're in Cleveland or Phoenix and Black Flag and The Ramones are headlining. But the wind is different and this is the year 2000. When you open the Gemini's door and the sound hits you, it's Brain Sample. Brain Sample, a local quintet, played their first show during the Green Grass Festival at Beck's Family Campground on Aug. 9, 1997, along with about 10 other bands. That first time on stage was in front of about 900 people. Since then, they've played a variety of venues, including gigs at the Orrville Inn and Woosterfest. Recently the five-member band has gained momentum with Gemini Lounge shows on New Years Eve, Jan. 21 and Feb. 18. They'll play the Gemini next on March 17 (St. Patrick's Day) and will appear April 5 at Howard's in Bowling Green. The five guys who make up Brain Sample give their linup as follows: Joey B. on guitar and vocals; Greg Matacale, who just sings, screams, and breaks things; Dirty D. on drums; Phil Amann aka Ale Fillman on guitar and vocals; and Sean Beavis aka Rick Danger on bass and backup vocals. The Gemini show on Feb. 18 drew a crowd of about 75 people, including fans from Wooster, Orrville and Millersberg. Patrick DeCarla and Denise Wise traveled all the way from Pittsburgh, Pa. "We came to Wooster this Friday to eat at The Olde Jaol and see the Brain Sample show here at the Gemini," DeCarla said during the quiet between sets. "They're a lively, young, fresh band who play their all." "It's nice to hear punk done right with such passion," screamed Tim Bucher of Wooster after he got off the dance floor. Brain Sample tore through original songs like, "No Escape," "Shante Om," "Sprinkles," and "Obscene TV," along with a cover of the Iggy and the Stooges classic "Search and Destroy." Towards the end of their set, they were joined by Jon Powers of Wooster, who did a hair-raising, spot-on version of the Sex Pistols' rabble-rousing "Anarchy in the UK." The audience filled the tables and booths for a better view of the band and the dance floor was filled with people spinnig and stomping to the pure, harsh chords, furious vocals and powerful hooks. The band members are as passionate about music off stage as they are on. "I love music for all its many and varied sonic qualities," Beavis comments. "I picked up a guitar one day and I've been playing it ever since. "You kind of learn by ear," he said. "I decided I wanted to play Bass, so I picked it up about 6 months ago. "We bring all kinds of bands to the music," Beavis said. "Anything that was actually lived and slaved over instead of some pre-fabricated boyband/Britney Spears crap."
