Artist description
Tramsleeper write songs that take the spirit ofMemphis and combine it with the aggression of post-punk Britain. As much influenced by the rawness and energy of early rock ‘n’ roll as the hypnotic rhythms of ‘90s Manchester, they take both a step further to create hard punchy rock songs for the end of the century and beyond. |

Artist History
Tramsleeper were originally formed in Manchester, England. The story begins in summer ’96 with a chance meeting on an aeroplane between frontman Pete Smith and drummer Andy Bayley. Both were returning to England after a stop off in Prague. Andy had been doing some concerts in Poland and Pete was returning from a two-year sojourn in Moscow. As the conversation and duty-free flowed it became clear that both had been inspired by the city they had just left. ‘Of course the fair maidens of Prague had an influence, as did the ever-flowing Staropramen spring,’ recalls Pete, ‘but it was the vibrancy and freshness of the music scene that really inspired us.’ Such was their inspiration that no sooner had the plane touched down than rehearsals were being organised and plans being made to return to Prague in the form of what was to become Tramsleeper. By summer ’97, following a string of dates in England, a four-piece line up, including one Woody Wilson on guitar, headed to Prague. A few low key gigs followed, although plans to relocate were put on hold when the band were invited to play a series of lucrative concerts in Hong Kong. Tramsleeper returned to Prague in autumn ’98. The band started playing to enthusiastic audiences both in the Czech Republic and Germany, taking time out to record the four track E.P, ‘Brave New World’. The songs received excellent reviews on various radio stations; most notably Prague’s Radio 1, Europa 2 and Czech Radio, where the band have since performed live acoustic sets. Then, in June ’99 the line up finally made concrete their base in Prague when the original bass player (forced home through illness) was replaced by Czech Pavel Junek. While still in the process of finishing a hectic summer of festivals, the boys have just completed their debut album: ‘Place in the Sun’.The band are currently planning a series of concerts for the end of the year in The Czech Republic, Germany and Poland to promote the album, which will be released on Pear Shaped records. |
