Press Reviews
Evan Dando of the "Lemonheads" says: "Lancing the boil on the butt of grunge, Australia's white warlock of the West, Angus McDeth, has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that his '93 debut 'Evil Empire' was no fluke, and subsequently, 'The Great Horned Beast' should find it's way into the collections of all serious metalophiliacs who place passion over fashion. On this album McDeth tells it like it is, and it's not always pretty. "Crucify the people...people" cries McDeth in 'Men of the Church' revealing his absolute intolerance for hypocrisy in religious idioms - especially certain religious figures in Adelaide. The politically erect McDeth then proceeds to mate Bon Scott with Big Black, the results of which are nothing short of devastating; 'Black Sex Rites' is a killer. "Let's get it on" suggests Angus, "I wanna be disgusting all night long", with admirable sexual frankness and evocative imagery. 'Monsters from Hell' takes up where Sabbath's 'Children of the Grave' left off, while 'Excrement', a scathing attack on Perth's political bullshit, puts any of Midnight Oil's social commentary to shame. Jamie Page [no relation to Pattie!] lets fly along the fretboard during 'I Hate You Moron' [a crushing composition unashamedly aimed at HM's Tina Peel], while drummer Cassy O produces more record breaking double kicks. Don't be suckered by poseurs and pin-up boys. 'The Great Horned Beast' is the genuine article; fast, furious, ferocious and fucked. 'Satan laughing spreads his wings'......"[Evan Dando, HM Magazine issue 74, April 1995] |
