Artist History
In 1997, the band Osgoode performed to a capacity audience at Toronto’s Whiskey Saigon, launching the Sony CD “DJ Iain’s Electronic Revolution”. Osgoode’s track “Has Been” receives a battery of national radio play and critical acclaim. Then – a hiatus. Why? “I realized just at the point where it was all starting to come together, that I didn’t want it – yet. There was still a lot to do.”
So Colin Kelday (the man behind the mixer), took his hiatus. The band was liquidated and Colin worked on cultiv ating his own personal approach to music.
For the next several years, Colin found his identity as a songwriter while honing and developing his own unique production style. Kelday, under the name “Snoog”, remixed for artists such as Orgy, Sky, The Boom tang Boys, The Rankins, and most recently co-produced half of the Watchmen album Slomotion. “The idea of taking something apart and reassembling it with my production styling was an exciting concept, and a great way to develop as a producer.” says Kelday.
After this personal hiatus, the Right in the Ear E.P. was created. Based on the concept of “a song for everyone” as opposed to “one song for one person and ten filler tacks for no one”, Osgoode’s Right in the Ear E.P. is a shockingly unique 7 track al bum that is made up of one man’s self sufficient skills as a producer, arranger, programmer, engineer and singer songwriter. Each song on the E.P is its own trip with a different style.
“I knew I was ready to do my own thing. I knew I had something to o ffer, and I had the skills to make the most attractive offering possible, true to my vision.”
Each song, crafted with this concept in mind, follows no linear arrangement or common framework found in other artists. Breaking down musical barriers, the Righ t in the Ear E.P.’s 7 tracks are diverse in genre but never stray away from the cinematic feel that is Osgoode’s signature production styling.
Whether you’re listening to “Back Home to the Boredom” funk mixed with electro dance, “Everyday” a theatrical yet subdued alternative trip hop track, “So What?” a tongue in cheek hip hop song or “Show me what you’ve got” where an alternative beat fuses metal and rap, this E.P. takes elements from all types of music and meshes them together.
As well, the Right in the Ear E.P. is enhanced with a CD ROM portion containing 30 tracks. And, while the 7 song E.P is Osgoode’s newest showing, the interactive collection is an audio journal of a myriad of past works from the last nine years. It acts as a pre-history to Osg oode, as well as a self-portrait of Kelday himself.
“I put these extra hidden tracks on the cd because I really wanted to give people the
ultimate enhanced CD. All this work was recorded over the last decade on unconventional recording gear. With the hidden tracks, I decided to make this first Osgoode release a Greatest hits CD compilation with everything I have done so far, with or without quality recordings.”
With this diverse, fresh, innovative, forward thinking, upbeat feel in mind, Kelday began to assemble a live band.
“It was a great benefit to me to assemble a band after putting together the E.P. It afforded me the ability to choose accompanying members based on their skills and desire to be a part of this, as opposed to bowing to the demons of convenience.”
