Artist History
Mosquito, from out of the land of rape and Lenin, out of the time of the rape of Lenin, arises thispsychoquartet. Hailing from Saint Petersburg,Russia’s most famous Psychobilly band has finallycommitted itself to plastic and what a debut itis. This amazing disk collects 15 brand new tunes, running, gunning, thrashing and pissing their wayin what is already whispered to be one of theseminal albums in Psychistory.Led by Gene ‘Hopscotch’Pekhterev on vocals, Andrew Drozdetsky manning the guitars,Raymond Zalumanis on drums and Nick Schelokov on the slap,Mosquito was formed in 1994 just a fewdays before their first show. The nameof the group was not easy to come by.Gene and Boris grabbed an English-Russiandictionary and went through it page by page looking for a cool moniker that fit. The search met no success and the gave up. Still nameless the day of their first concert Boris called Gene up after being harressed by the club owner. After all, you can’t play without a name unless you’re bad enough that the crowd is going to name you something rather ugly anyway. As Gene answered the phone, the dictionary he left on the desk was knocked onto the floor and low and behold there sat Mosquito on the open page. It sounded good, didn’t need translation, was easy to say and the show started in mere hours. Mosquito was born!!!Getting started was a bitch, just like doing anything else in Russia. Everybody has problems and they have them all the time; then there are musicians who have it ten times worse. There was no place to play, nothing to play on and no money for anything. But if you want to play badly enough… So they started gathering in Nick’s communal apartment on the famous Fontanka River. They eventual were given the opportunity to practice from midnight to 6 in the morning at the club ‘Gora’. Things are much easier now the fame has arrived; ‘Mosquito’ use both the ‘K.B.’ and ‘Polygon’ clubs as home bases. Gene says that as far as looking for new tunes, they still can’t get anything new done though if there not sitting around at home drinking beers and doing endless variations looking for that new tune. ‘Mosquito’ has already put out quite a bit of music on disk. They got there first material out on the «Greatest Hits of Polygon Club» released in 1996 by Polygon Records, Russia. Their second and forth forays into recorded music were also on Polygon Records. The second being a track on «Polygon. Best ‘97» and the forth being «Polygon. Live Sound.» done in 1998. Shaman Entertainment put out a sampler containing ‘Mosquito’ in 1997 called «Psychoburg Aboriginals». They spent two years fleshing out the tunes, which ended up on this disk. It was a time of refinement, perfecting the sound. They didn’t release anything in this period but instead concentrated on touring, playing live and finding what worked. Finally in 2000 Mosquito ‘Wants Your Blood’ was released by Mikadox Records. Their first full-length album was the culmination of a lot of work over too many years, overcoming more than too many hardships and letdowns. They have been busy since the release supplying songs for the Mikadox Records compilation ‘Splendid Seven of Rockabilly’, the joint Mikadox Records and On the Hill Records, Japan, collection ‘Psychobilly Frenzy’, the On the Hill Records ‘Tribute to Batmobile' and to ‘High Voltage Vol. 2’ by the German label ‘Black Sky Records’.The new album is a collection of tight, driving Psychobilly tunes with some silky smooth pop hooks and showcasing Hopscotch’s Mike Tyson growl. The sound is almost a live acid-tinged psychedelic vibe mixed with metal intensity. The music is what separates this album, lyrically an English teacher’s nightmare the odd phrasing and word play with the growl and terror stricken delivery make for a lethal combination. The album starts with the amped instrumental ‘Menace’.‘Depression’, the ‘fearful disease that can only be cured by your eyes’ is the boy’s salute to ‘that’ girl, the one that drove you to the depths. ‘Ghost-Ghost’ with its hard-rockin bass and guitar interplay and the mini drum breaks is a melodic gem, albeit at a manic pace. The boys are self-proclaimed Ford fans as witnessed by the third track ‘Ford Thunderbird`. Don’t expect to hear this on a commercial any time soon. Maybe it has something with the jackhammer drumming and the demented twist with which Hopscotch delivers the lyrics. The laid back ‘Catatonia’ with its distortion guitars, funky bass line and jazz drumming is storytelling at its best. If we could only figure out why Mosquito are using ‘battle spears’ in their spaceship! The tight arrangements and high energy of other tracks like ‘Devil Strong Men Power’, ‘Carriage Full of Corpses’, ‘Holiday in Hell’ and the rest are pure power Rockabilly played by guys who spend more time with their instruments then their women. The album is a tour-de-force by a band that has talent to burn. This is one of my top five for the first step in the new millennium. |
