Artist History
The self-titled debut album from Mother God Moviestar unfolds in threephases: nine hard V heavy guitar songs, four experimental interludes ("I I,""Female," "66" and "Tunnelhead") and finally four electronic remixes of thoseinterludes. On the same album are the underground, the indie and the techno;the gritty and the glamorous (even female singers); the straightforward andthe densely multi-layered. That the band hails from Chicago, a city without a music industry "scene,"should not be surprising. The cutting edge is always forged from the bottomup, not the top down. Artists as diverse and ahead-of-the-curve as SmashingPumpkins, Ministry, Liz Phair, and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult allemerged from Chicagoland. So when Tsiolis stalks the stage accompanied by afemale singer (a different one for each performance), backed by fourmusicians who play with the intense seriousness of jazz players and ablue-haired rave kid bouncing around as he DJs, cliches about heavy musicquickly fall by the wayside. Mother God Moviestar was conceived in January 1997 when Charlie Tsiolisreturned from a vacation in Greece, where he was bom, and decided to create anew band with a new sound. His previous group, Aftermath, acritically-acclaimed legend in the heavy underground, had been one of themore complex, forward-thinking of the genre. Leaving its legacy intact and inthe past, Tsiolis steeped into the future. "People into heaviness can bepretty close-minded. We pushed the limits and they didn't want to be pushed.Mother God Moviestar goes beyond even those limits-we have no limits." Asproof, Mother God Moviestar includes a techno DJ. Delta 9 had played guitarin metal bands before being introduced to rave culture. Since 1993, he'dappeared on more than 30 techno compilations as well as numerous other albumsand EPs, and performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. As for Tsiolis, he moved with his family to Chicago when he was an infant, and first met guitarist Steve Sacco in high school. Even at that young age,Sacco's reputation as a guitar teacherand player was widespread. But Charliewas one of his more difficult students. "I gave up on lessons because I wasimpatient. He wanted me to learn the basics and I wanted to play 'Stairway ToHeaven' right away." Eventually, Tsiolis put aside the guitar andconcentrated on singing. Though his father was a well-known tailor who outfitted many musiccelebrities, from Styx to the Jacksons, being a musician was the only thingTsiolis ever wanted to do. After enrolling at a small college, he met Saccoagain and they took a music class together. "Our meeting was destiny. But hewas into progressive and jazz, and I was more heavy and underground. But Iconvinced him to write with me." Ray Schmidt had a similar reputation as one of the best drummers in the city.John Lovette was recruited as a bassist but, moths later when the band wastalking about adding another guitarist, revealed he was really a guitarist andswitched instruments. Bassist Chris Waldron completed the group. Mother GodMoviestar, (Zoid/Interscope) produced by Tsiolis with Sacco and Jeff Lane, was recorded in Chicago ftom AprilAugust 1997. "We've never sat down and hada plan," Tsiolois explains. We just wanted to make music that has never beenheard before." Their name is just as original. "Mother God Moviestar. Three icons. Whatpeople worship most. We come from our mother, we're born into religion, andthen we're hypnotized by stars, whether it'sMichael Jordan or Marion Brandonor John Lennon. But the name does not exist in the dictionary, cannot bedefined. It's ours alone." Mother God Moviestar is difficult to categorize-and that's just fine withTsiolis. "This music would be too extreme to be anywhere but on an indielabel a few years ago. That's changed. Now we're pushing the envelope, andwe're doing it our way. You never know what's coming next from us." What isfor certain is that you'll soon thank Mother God Moviestar for ruining thelistening to of any music that's less than original. |
