    Artist description
The organ of Église Saint-François-d'Assise was installed in 1988 by Guilbault-Thérien Inc. of St-Hyacinthe, Québec. It has two manuals and 31 stops. The keyboard action is mechanical; the pedal is electropneumatic. Two harpsichords are used in this recording. The first is a single-manual Flemish instrument built in 1983 by Willard Martin of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It is used for the Prelude and Fugue by J. Christoph Bach. The second harpsichord is a two-manual Flemish instrument built by Rainer Maria Schütze of Heidelberg in 1970. Both instruments belong to the Department of Music at the University of Ottawa. The fortepiano is a copy of a Viennese piano by Anton Walter from about 1795. It was built by Richard Hester of Albany, New York in 1996. The fortepiano also belongs to the Department of Music at the University of Ottawa. Le fortepiano est une copie d'un piano viennois d'Anton Walter datant d'environ 1795. Il est également la propriété du Département de musique de l'Université d'Ottawa.

    Artist History
Karen Holmes was born in Toronto, and completed an A.R.C.T. in piano. After she graduated with a B.A. from the University of Toronto, a French Government Scholarship took her to Toulouse, France, where she studied for three years at the Conservatoire. She obtained a Premier Prix in organ in the class of Xavier Darasse. Canada Council grants allowed three summer study sessions in Europe with Anton Heiller and Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini. Her harpsichord teachers have included Kenneth Gilbert and John Grew. Karen Holmes holds the diploma of F.R.C.C.O., and was national President of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO) from 1996 to 1998. She has taught organ, harpsichord and Baroque ensembles at the University of Ottawa since 1969. She performs frequently as a solo organist and harpsichordist as well as in chamber music ensembles, and is heard regularly on the CBC and Radio-Canada. During her term as President of the RCCO, she played recitals and conducted masterclasses and workshops in Centres across Canada, from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Victoria B.C. She is interested in unusual programming and has performed several recitals combining Baroque and 20th century music, or music for two different keyboard instruments. This recording is based on a programme presented by Karen Holmes in 1998 at the University of Ottawa, using its organ, harpsichords and fortepiano.
