Artist description
Minneapolis-based down and above have emerged with a refreshingly original sound that blends heavy grooves, 3-part harmonies, and hardcore-inspired breakdowns into a powerful, melodic mix. Artist History
All originally from the small town of Kalispell, MT, the three longtime friends eagerly entered into the thriving twin cities music scene at the end of 2000 with the release of their debut EP, "about the three of you". Starting out by playing tiny record stores and college cafeterias, the band cultivated a tight, high-energy live show which they eventually moved into larger clubs, playing to a fanbase that was steadily built by word of mouth and the support of local radio.
2001-2002 brought rapid growth for Down and Above. By the end of 2001, DNA had established themselves as a headliner in the twin cities, and soon sold out of their original EP pressing. With a more defined sound, the band began work on their first full-length CD, "vena cava". By releasing a few advance tracks to mp3.com, downloads exceeded 70,000 by the time the album was released. (To date downloads have exceeded the 145,000 mark). The end of August 2002 brought the release of Down and Above’s first full-length album, vena cava. The album was celebrated with a CD release show that drew over 1,200 fans to the Quest Club in Minneapolis.
The band has steadily received increased regional radio airplay, and now has heavy support by 93X (KXXR/FM), who has twice featured dna on the 93X Cagematch (Another Day, Killswitch), with dna winning every bout for a week straight and being deemed "retired champions" for the match. Down and Above have been featured on many prominent music sites including Kings of A&R, Blistering.com, Nosebleed 17, and MP3.com, and were recently recognized as one of America's top 15 unsigned bands by The Lowdown Magazine. May, 2003 brought further validation of the band’s live show, when Down and Above won the 93X-Fest Battle of the Bands, Minnesota's largest & most prominent battle of the bands competition, and were given the opening slot on 93X-Fest in front of such acts as Audioslave, Stone Sour, Saliva, the Ataris, and more.
Down and Above have plans to release a new full-length album early in 2004, which will be supported by a short national tour. In the meantime DNA are playing a handful of regional dates as they prepare the rest of the new material for the upcoming record. |
