Damien PARDOENDamien Pardoen was born in Nivelles (Belgium) in 1974 and started learning the violin at the early age under the tuition of Yaga Siwy. He continued his training at music academies in Nivelles and Brussels. In 1989 he went to the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he was taught by Agustin Leon Ara. However, it was in Philippe Koch’s class at the Royal Conservatory of Mons that he was awarded his first violin prize with distinction, and at the Royal Conservatory of Liège he received his advanced diploma in violin with a top distinction grade. He studied chamber music under André Siwy at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and won a first prize there, again with a top distinction and an advanced diploma with a starred top distinction, both in chamber music. In 1997 he obtained a first-class degree from the Catholic University of Louvain in Physics Engineering. He has also won the first prize at three music competitions ; for violin (1991) and for chamber music (1993) at Axion Classics (Dexia Bank Competition), and at the Mathilde Horlaît-Dapsens Foundation Chamber Music Competition in 1994.A great lover of chamber music, Damien Pardoen has played in numerous violin quartets (Capelletti and Tetras), trios and duets, all over Europe (Belgium, France, Portugal, Poland etc.). He has also taken part in many teaching programmes, master classes, and European music festivals. He is currently preparing for international competitions under the tuition of André Siwy. He reached the semifinals (in sixth place) of the Johannes Brahms Competition held in Pörtschach (Austria). At present he is teaching in Philippe Koch’s violin class at the Royal Conservatory of Liège.Stéphane DE MAYStéphane De May, a Belgian pianist born in 1970, studied with Aquiles Delle Vigne at the École Normale Alfred Cortot in Paris, where he was awarded the advanced diploma with the congratulations of the jury in 1990. He also obtained numerous distinctions among which may be mentioned : the advanced solfege diploma (1992, Royal Conservatory of Brussels), the concertist diploma (1993, Conservatory of Rotterdam), teacher’s diploma in musical pedagogy (1995, IMEP) and the advanced chamber music diploma with the highest distinction and congratulations of the jury (1999, Royal Conservatory of Mons). Stéphane De May also won prizes on the international forum : finalist in the “Zuidhollands Concours” (Leiden, 1991), semifinalist in the International Concours of Val d’Aoste (Italy, 1999), finalist in the World Piano Competition of Cincinnati (USA, 1992), semifinalist of the Carlo Soliva International Piano Competition (Italy, 1992)... He took further courses with Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Tatiana Evdokimova, Tjitte Weber and Guy Van Waas. He regularly performs in Belgium, USA, Italy, Austria, France, Spain, Holland, Germany etc., giving solo and chamber music concerts as well as playing with symphony orchestras. He is currently accompanist at the Royal Conservatory of Mons and teacher at the Academy of Brussels and Conservatory of Leuven. He has recorded a CD fully devoted to the music of Michel Lysight (Oréades, René Gailly 87 111).In 1998, during a concert tour of Germany, Damien Pardoen met the pianist Stéphane de May and the two have become a strong and distinguished duo. Their partnership has enabled them to explore the wealth of sonatas for violin and piano ; together they are building a rich and eclectic repertoire which they are presenting to appreciative audiences at many concerts and festivals across Europe. Indeed, they were playing together in July 1999 when they received their advanced diploma in chamber music (with unanimous jury congratulations) in Guy van Waas and André Siwy’s classes. Their common interest in contemporary music has inspired them on this CD, to tackle postmodern music.
