TORPEDO LUCAS
Self-Propelled
Geez, talk about having the poise to really, and I mean really, strike the scene with
the almighty wing-wang of rock and roll. To have the nerve to serve up a moniker with the gusto
of a full-on naval assault. I'm talking about quirky bass lines and rock-steady drumming. I'm
talking a guitar that can double the sound effects of a chainsaw massacre in any state of the
continental U.S.. I'm talking Torpedo Lucas, veterans of South Florida rock who can still wear
jeans and Chuck Taylor All-Stars and shake it on stage.
Anybody who's been around the local music scene and hasn't gotten too far into the gin
and tonics will remember drummer George Graquitena from the great Fay Wray, the doubly
cool Cell 63, and the notorious F-Boyz. Not to mention that the bass player/vocalist, Nelson
Artime was in Periwinkle, yet another sunny South Florida oldie but goodie.
Luck? Nope. A perfect lining of unknown forces? Nope. Maybe, just maybe, what we have
here is the audible equivalent of a sniper assigned with a kill shot, slowly aiming the carbine on
the target. Yeah. That's it. We have the madness of Hasil Adkins and the chaos of a case of
Pabst Blue Ribbon in "Wild Man". The lucidity of Surfer Rosa-era Pixies on "Blank Stare" and
the good times of punk rock in "Situation". The production on Self-Propelled is kind of hurried,
but it helps on certain numbers, like "Pass Me By" in which the futility of the event seems
drowned in indifference and pushed into chain-smoking depression.
But better than all of that, and completely devoid of military allusion, is the fact that it
contradicts the old saying of Florida punk-rock: old punkers go to Chattanooga to die. Well,
some, maybe. But not these three. And that's one of the reasons why Torpedo Lucas is good.

This is one of Torpedo Lucas' best EPs. With a more musical influence,
and a hint of Misfits, and Generation X hidden beneath the woodwork
Many would say that this CD is "slower" or "softer" than the old EP
but this EP is proof of the bands maturity as artist, range of sounds,
and determination. Just because bands write new songs, doesn't mean
the old ones are gone. Nelson, and George have come along way.
"Take your Turn" is an awesome 4 song demo. The best song on the
CD has to be "Yeah, Right" this is kind of like the song that links their
old sound from "Self -Propelled" with the more mature sound of
"Take your Turn". It's fun-filled and yet keeps a respective amount
of talent in it. With over 30 years of combined Punk Rock experience,
Torpedo Lucas has mastered the art of punk rock. The drummer and
backing vocalist George has played in Miami's CELL 63 and F-BOYZ,
Gainesville's FAY WRAY, and was lead vocalist for Miami's
JOBBERNOWL. Now on Cup a Joe records, the band will hopefully
be putting out more CD's for us. I definitely recommend this CD if you
like bands like The Explosion, Social Distortion, The Misfits, Bulimics,
Generation X, and even The Nobodys. I also suggest you pick up their
old EP "Self Propelled" it has more straight forward punk rock, and
shoutin sing-along bar songs.
