Press Reviews
Billboard Magazine - March 3, 2001 issue, p. 18: On Grady Champion's second album for Shanachie, we hear elements of his country past (Mississippi) and his urban present (Miami). A pronounced soul quality is heard on tracks like "Wine and Women" and, with its distinctive Memphis sound, "Love Is My Middle Name." But most of the tunes here are the product of mainstream blues styles, referencing either blues/rock - as with "Brother, Brother" and "Stop Chasing Me" - or Chicago blues, as on "Honeybee" and "Children of the Corn." Champion is also capable of working a Delta-style harmonica sound alongside a bit of rap ("Policeman Blues"). Throughout, Champion, who had a hand in writing nine of the 10 tracks, proves himself adept at devising a contemporary blues tune. - PVVDenver Post - This young charismatic, harmonica player/singer from Mississippi stole the show when he (and his cracker jack band) opened for Johnny Winter at the Fillmore Auditorium.Tower Records UK magazine voted Payin' for My Sins one of 10 best blues albums of 1999Tower Records UK magazine voted talent most deserving of wider recognition in 2000Rock & Blues News - This is spine-tingling, gut-wrenching, in-your-face, tear-jerking blues of the first classReal Blues Magazine - We have a "new-blues-kid-on-the-block" and he's damn good. In these days of hordes of stale interpreters and carpet-bagging blooze practioners, it's a might big relief to hear a young Afro-American laying down authentic sounds such as these without a trace of pretentiousness. 4 bottles for a CD well worth checking out. Big things predicted. |
