Artist History
1997 – The project Ensoph born from the ashes of Endaymynion, a prog-doom band which, in three years of life, has released two demos: “Sonnets Of Inquietude” and “Thy Art”. After this first experience, Giuliano (guitar) and Zenone (drums) feel the necessity to blend into a musical project their passion for esotericism, theatre, philosophy and, obviously, gothic culture and sounds.
1998 – Ensoph releases their first MCD, “Les Confessions du Mat”, for the Italian label No-Brain Rec. This press is in a very limited edition of 500 pieces. The three tracks that compose this work show the musical way chosen by the band to express its esoteric/philosophical concept, a particular blend of Dark/Ambient and Gothic/Doom Metal with some folk/ethnic influences. The line-up is: Mahavira (male vocals), Patrizia (female vocals), Giuliano (guitars, bass), Leonardo (keyboards, piano, accordion), Zenone (drums, percussions). The MCD receive good reviews from world wide ‘zines and magazines for the freshness of its proposal. To better express the theatrical element of their songs in the live dimension, Ensoph begins a collaboration with the theatrical company Noir. This collaboration gives birth to some special live events during the year.
1999 – The Portuguese label Orofarne Music reprints the MCD in a nice tape version.
2000 – After some changes of line-up the band produces a new promo: “Ananke – The Spyral-Trinity beyond Alpha & Omega”. The new male singer is Nicola and the new bass player is Massimo. The new songs present a dark progressive mood and some electronic influences. After the release of the promo there are some new changes of line up: the female singer Patrizia leaves the band and Anna at flute completes the group.
2001 – “Ananke – The Spyral-Trinity beyond Alpha & Omega” gives to the band the chance to reach a deal with Beyond Prod., an Italian label that produces the full length CD “The Bleeding Womb Of Ananke” that is out in June 2001. The first press is of 1000 deluxe digipack CD (with 4 gatefolds cover and 20 pages booklet). The line-up involved in the recording is: Nicola (male vocals), Giuliano (guitars, sampling, programming), Massimo (bass), Leonardo (keys, piano, accordion), Anna (flute – from Paul Chain’s band), Zenone (drums, percussions). The debut album is more metal and electronic influenced than the previous works, but presents the same trade-mark sound of all the other releases. The album receives incredible responses all over the world.
2002 - “Bleeding Womb Of Ananke” was licensed by Beyond… to the russian label Irond. The band starts a new intense live activity with the help of Alter Arts Promotion. In the first months of the year the band plans a new promo, called “Sophia”, which will contains a remix of Bruno Kramm of Das Ich . The title of the song chosen for the project is “Sophia’s Fall”. The new promo contains two new tracks (“Sophia’s Fall” and “Proudly Divine”) and the B. Kramm’s remix (“Sophia’s Fall – Sophies Welt RX). The remix gives to the band a great visibility, ‘cause it has been presented in the VV.AA. CDs enclosed to the magazines Gothic , Zillo (GER) and Ritual (ITA).
2003 – The band plays some explosive gigs with bands such Killing Miranda, Novembre, Mortuary Drape, Ephel Duath receiving great reviews from the italian press. In spring Ensoph returns in No-Brain Studio to record the new album “OPUS DEMENTIAE”, that contains 7 new tracks and the three ones from the “Promo 2002” re-mixed and re-mastered. It will be out for Code 666 Rec. in September/October 2003.

Press Reviews
The band received Optimistic reviews all over the worldFrom Dark and Metal specialized magazine.ENSOPH Les Confessions du Mat Something for fans of really dark and romantic music. Ensoph from Italy play atmospheric mixture of gothic, folk and metal. The band uses even such instruments as accordion or traverse-flute to lend those 3 songs on tape more originality and magic. According to info, there is a philosophical-esoterical concept behind this tape, and it definitely fits this melancholic and mystic atmosphere of songs. This cassette (about 30 minutes) will appeal to all fans of gothic and dark-avantgarde. Good. (SV) [5$ Europe, 6$ rest of the world, Fernando Reis, Rua Firmino Rebelo 15, r/ch dto, 2780 Porto Salvo, Portugal] [teskio@spiro.fisica.unipd.it]Ensoph (Ita) - "Les Confessions du Mat" - MCD '99 - No Brain Rec A MCD in three chapters, presenting some effective gothic oriented metal (?) or metal oriented gothic? I'm not really sure whether I can use the word metal here, at times the instrumentalisation is heavy enough, at others it disappears into a dreamy cloud of atmospheric music helped along by the diversity permitted by a 6 piece and three guest musicians and poets! Among others you will find the use of accordions and flutes spicing up the variety of life (music)! On the whole it's quite good, very chilled out most of the time, and suitably varied the rest, and at times downright bizarre. Not recommended to thrash maniacs, but to anybody with an open mind this is quality music, albeit somewhat background at times. Christian, Via Puotti 54, 35010, Villanova di CSP (PD), Italy. Ensoph - _Les Confessions du Mat_ (No Brain, 1998) by: Brian Meloon (8 out of 10) Ensoph was formed from the ashes of Endaymynion [CoC #13] and have a similar -- but more refined -- sound. Overall, their sound is gloomy, comparable to doom bands like the Romanians Abigail [CoC #33] or God [CoC #38]. There are three tracks on this MCD, the first two clocking in at about eleven minutes each and the final track at five minutes. The music on the long songs varies between light sections which typically utilize clean guitar and lighter keyboard tones and heavier sections with crunching guitars and few (if any) keyboards, as well as sections showing characteristics of each. The band manages to keep the songs flowing, avoiding the monotony traps that similar bands sometimes fall into. They also use a variety of keyboard and guitar tones, as well as flutes and even an accordion. Each of the songs is layered, yet the parts fit together well, achieving a cohesive sound. The vocals vary between male and female clean vocals and the occasional black metal-style raspy vocals. While both vocalists are good, the male vocalist's accent is more obvious due to his lower pitch. The playing is good from each of the members, though none of the material is particularly technical. The production is somewhat drab, but this fits the music and adds to its gloomy feel. Overall, this is a very impressive offering, as it features a unique and original sound. Highly recommended for fans of gloomy music. |
