From MODERN TWANG: AN ALTERNATIVE COUNTRY MUSIC GUIDE By David Goodman Page 302, between Tennessee Rhythm Riders and The Texana Dames Stephen W.Terrell Singer/Songwriter, Satirist; DJ: Music Journalist Santa Fe, New Mexico Northern New Mexico is a unique place where Pueblo Indians, Chicanos and cowboys mix and mingle with artists, New Agers and atomic scientists. In the early 1980s, Santa Fe singer/songwriter Stephen Terrell captured with great intelligence and humor, the essence of this strange scene on two fine albums. Picnic Time For Potatoheads featured backing from a group of local musicians, including ex-Mothers of Invention drummer Jimmy Carl (I'm the Indian of the Group) Black. Terrell's songs, "Cajun Clones", "Green Weenie", "Solar Broken Home" and "I Lost My Baby To A Satan Cult" got lots of attention in New Mexico and beyond (The Dr. Demento Show and KFAT in California).Meanwhile Terrell became a fixture at local Santa Fe hangouts and in 1984 released Pandemonium Jukebox. Recorded in a bedroom on a 4-track cassette, it is lo-fi to say the least, but has some gems like "Huggin' the John", "The Mushroom Sweet", and "The Jackalope Chant". However, it was limited to a few hundred copies, and when it receivedlittle airplay, Terrell gave up performing to become a crime reporter and music reviewer ("Terrell's Tune-Up") for The Santa Fe New Mexican into the late 1980s and 1990s.Currently Terrell hosts two alt. country/ roots show on KSFR in Santa Fe: The Santa Fe Opry featured "Country music as God intended it to sound, while Terrell's Sound World is "freeform weirdo radio." He writes insightful alt. country/Americana reviews for Re:Verb Online. He has also revived his musical career by reissuing Picnic Time For Potatoheads on CD with nine cuts from Pandemonium Jukebox and in 1996 co-wrote Danger Peligro with Erik Ness. Terrell maintains a fascinating web site with details about his career, original music articles and links to alt country artists and web pages plus "miscellaneous weirdities" from Masked Wrestlers to the Three Stooges.
