Artist History
DaisyChain founders Dave Schellenberg and Johnny Hose “came to the world in the usual way,” as the song goes. In this case, it was a hand-scribbled ad in a St. Louis music store that shouted, “Guitarist Looking for soon to be Working Cover Band.” At the time, it seemed good enough for Dave, a recent journalism grad who didn’t exactly relish the idea of writing obituaries for a po-dunk county newspaper. Turns out, it was fine for Johnny too. Fresh out of recording school in LA, he had a burning desire to play music, not just record it. For three years, Dave and Johnny knocked around the local club scene playing cover tunes and surviving on Ramen noodles and moonpies. But there was another hunger going on here... an insatiable hunger to create. What followed was a series of songs... first steps toward a creative obsession that would carry on to this very day. Johnny and Dave buried themselves in their home studio, and so began the wrestling of influences that would eventually become the DaisyChain sound. Johnny was an exuberant rock and roller, Dave a pensive fan of singer/songwriters. Heads knocked, creative fists flew and then something magical happened... a song called “She Won’t Let Me Go”. A common musical vision seemed to settle peacefully upon the guys. Dave got his storytelling chops in, Johnny got his rock and roll passions in - and most important... both guys discovered that the blend of their two voices was a force that they couldn’t ignore. Finally... common ground. What followed was a self-produced CD demo that capitalized on this newfound formula. The demo quickly earned them spots in a number of regional and national showcases. Opening shows for artists like Bob Dylan & Paul Simon, Sonia Dada, and the Freddy Jones Band gave the guys a new confidence, as did airplay on St. Louis radio. Then came the curious idea of taking their music to Nashville. Music City quickly embraced DaisyChain and vice versa. The guys played Nashville, dragging around their acoustic guitars and playing “unplugged” at writers’ nights and showcases. Their catchy pop attitude and flowing harmonies caught on fast, and Nashville’s earthy instrumentations were growing on the guys as well. Then on one strange evening, they happened upon a club in downtown Nashville that was hosting a songwriters’ night. What the hell, they figured... they walked in and somehow got on the play list. Fifteen acts later, the guys discovered they had won what turned out to be a contest and were awarded an opportunity to play live on the air across 38 states, Canada and Mexico from WSM Radio as featured artists on the "Opry Star Spotlight". It was both strange and wonderful. Over the next few months, the guys made friends fast and before long, had been selected by BMI to showcase at the legendary Exit/In. The guys were playing their cards just right in Nashville, but there was still work to be done at home. A full-length CD release was in the works back home and it needed to be completed. The guys gathered up a smokin group of talented musicians and started recording tracks. Six months later, “Bring the Rain” a compelling 13-song CD was born. The release showcases the DaisyChain’s trademark vocal harmonies, infectious pop song craftsmanship, and an earthy heartland vibe. Today, “Bring the Rain” awaits only one thing... your ears. And you, our listeners, are going to write the continuing chapters of the DaisyChain story.
