Press Reviews
MOJO - The Music Magazine - June 2000Debut LP from LA powerpoppers who've drunk at the shrine of the Fabs and other Brits.Bruce Witkin's label Pop Squad promotes the poppier end of the burgeoning LA underground scene. Now his own band, Supremium, debut with a slinky stab at pop-legend status, packing 11 pert anthems into just over half an hour. It's basic verse-chorus Beatles designed stuff, but there's enough Tom Petty, Graham Parker and Elvis Costello in there to add an extra dimension. Witkin's vocal is beautifully poised and the arrangements add an extra layer of glitzy jangle that racks up neatly against his upbeat storylines. But it's the band's adherence to simple melody and their tempered back beat and strident guitar motifs that, in places lift the proceedings way clear of their obvious inspiration. FINE STUFF. - Dave Henderson |
