Press Reviews
I stumbled upon Sonya Kaye while browsing Christian Blues on MP3.com. I loved the songs I downloaded, so I got the CD. Sonya has a tremendous voice that delivers the emotion of her faith. She moves easily from blues to jazz to R&B. Her backing band makes the transitions just as effortlessly. Standout tracks are I've Never Been to Seminary (blues), Canann Land (jazz), and Use Me, Lord (R&B and a clever re-write of Bill Withers' hit). Sonya also ably covers Stevie Wonder's Heaven is a Zillion Light Years Away. The CD ends with Servant's Heart, a loving tribute to a Christian matriarch. Make sure you don't pull the CD from your player too soon; an acoustic version of Servant's Heart is a hidden delight. Overall, the production is well done, however, Sonya's vocals sometimes get lost in the mix. This is a real shame, because her voice is the standout instrument in every song. Sonya's style of Christian music is hard to find, but worth looking for. -Tom McCool, Ivy Tech State College, Lafayette, Indiana |
