Artist description
Countless hours in a garage studio with a modest Macintosh loaded with Cubase VST and a few extra gadgets such as a WX-5 wind synth, V-drums, and Cheetoes. My inspiration is kindled by thoughts of becoming a part of the Thornton School of Music at USC. I would love to have formal training in music composition as I have thus far been 99% on my own. Besides being smack dab in the heart of the motion picture industry, USC's professors are actual professionals in the business. Where else could one hope to gain such "real world" opportunity and skills? I am crossing my fingers... |

Artist History
Life Changing Experiences-------Human beings are in a constant state of experience through the very act of existence. Many of these experiences seem to not have any significant or life changing effects on the individual; however, there are always a few events powerful enough to redefine ones personality, setting the course for the rest of their life.----------It was the summer of my junior year at Palmdale High School, a year dedicated to challenging myself through advanced academic classes and leadership responsibility in multiple clubs and organizations. I decided to maintain this momentum while attending CSSSA, the California State Summer School for the Arts, majoring in music composition. CSSSA was not a summer camp for artists, but rather a professionally geared school to help high school students advance in their art through both teaching fundamentals and exposing them to other forms of their creative medium. For example, the music department taught students traditional music theory and composition while exposing them to other cultural music, such as African drumming and Gamelan. As I became more familiar with this curriculum, I began to consciously apply the lessons and new influences to my compositions, giving my music a flavor and dimension never previously experienced. This alone would have made for a worthwhile summer; however my CSSSA experience offered much more.--------------Being secluded at CSSSA, totally removed from the people in my everyday life, I soon found myself having to start from scratch at the social level. Taking this as an opportunity, I involved myself in both personal and professional interaction with other artists. I soon found friendships forming of a deeper level than I’d previously experienced. It was through these interactions that I found that relationships can themselves be multi-leveled, which in turn makes for a more fulfilling friendship. My interaction with others taught me much, though the most influential lesson came through personal exploration.-----------Removed from the familiar habits of home, this new environment offered an opportunity to look inside myself and considered my part in the world around me. I wondered about this new inward soul searching and how it might influence my compositions. One day when I was stumped on where to take a new song, I quieted my mind, and instead of creating a new part, I listened for one. I separated myself from my normal earthly perspective and let my mind venture. Out of nowhere a beautiful symphony emerged in my head. It continued the theme created before and took it to a higher level, exploding into layers of heavenly sound. All I could do was translate what I heard to the best of my ability, which turned out to be the most exciting and emotional piece of music I had ever written. I was so ecstatic with this new found musical source; and the MIDI lab setup at CSSSA was the perfect environment to translate it. The dynamics that I experienced were so powerful that I dedicated my senior year to introducing MIDI lab systems at my high school. Thanks to the open ears of our music director Tom Hixon, the funds were made available, and we were able to create a functioning music composition lab in which I presently donate my time as an instructor.------------ My CSSSA experience was truly invaluable, and one of the prime events which helped shape me as an individual and define the path in which I now choose to walk into the future. Through my detailed search of schools, I have found that the University of Southern California is the only one capable of fulfilling my passion of scoring for film. The USC environment promises to nurture a detailed and disciplined approach to music fundamentals, and advances to articulate the “real world” for the student wishing to participate in the competitive industry of film composition. I believe my experience at USC will be another grand step in discovering a creative side of myself that is yet unknown, which will in turn render new insights and influence within my chosen field of study.------------- Upon my acceptance to USC, it will be my goal to experience advanced learning and growth which I will take to the highest level possible in the mediums of music for film. USC is the logical step in my development as a composer. I am grateful for the opportunity to become a member of the Trojan family! |
