    Artist description
Evolutionary. Creative. Innovative. These are some of the things that people are saying about Elements of the Outer Realm. Formed in April 1999, out of the city of Long Beach, this seven-piece band consists of two MC's, guitar, bass drums, keyboard and Djembe. Their sound is heavily influenced by a wide variety of music, including Hip-Hop, Jazz, Classical, Latin Jazz, Afro-Cuban Rhythms, World Music, and Spoken Word. When you hear them, not only do you hear all of the influences within the music, but also you feel it and fall in love. The innovation is emphasized in their music. MC's Christian Mendoza and Derrick Engoy deliver their lyrics in a poetic and rhythmic style. Drummer Reginald Spivey creates multi-dimensional beats, most deem only playable through electronic means. Adding to that is the transient vocals and bottom-heavy bass lines from Bassist/Vocalist J. Michael Roy. Their music is brought into fruition through the beautiful jazz melodies emanating from the keyboard of Jojo Villanueva and the versatile styles of Guitarist Ian Azuelo. Lastly, the multi-talented Genesis not only plays the saxophone, but has also learned to play a hand drum from the country of Ghana in Africa called Djembe. It has been said that Africa is the birthplace of rhythm - which is a large part of their music and is expressed in ways where the beats are considered off time or funky. Music is dominated by either rhythm or melody. The music of Elements of the Outer Realm is a perfect marriage between the two. Each and every person in the band has a deep adoration for music. Some would describe this love as codependent. Music is the way that they deal with life. Through their music, they are able to express the many emotions and issues that we as human beings go through. One belief that they have as a band, as well as human beings, is that this world can be a beautiful place. Things like selfishness, hatred, and anger dominate our lives and make this world the way it is. In this day and age, many of today's popular songs deal with subjects such as the mistreatment of women, killing of people, and destruction of the world. The most refreshing thing about Elements of the Outer Realm is that their songs do not promote these issues because they feel that it is important to keep their message as positive as possible. The musical experience that Elements of the Outer Realm brings about is a spiritual high. It is best listened to with an open mind and a kind heart. They believe that each and every one of us is an individual and that being different is a celebration of our humanity. More often than not, artists will make music because they want to be perceived as cool or famous. Elements of the Outer Realm make music for the sheer love of it and you can see their heart and soul each and every time they perform.
