Artist description
Soulbread has been working to revolutionize heavy rock music as we know it. Many different musical influences are blended into traditional rock, from 70's funk music, to blues, to jazz, to metal. This blend gives Soulbread a sound of their own. The fans submit to the urge to jump in the mosh pit and enjoy the music at its core, letting all of their energy flow with the tonal explosion that Soulbread puts out for them. The legion of BreadHeads grows as they are given the full experience of the hard and real rock. The words speak to the inner soul of those seeking a higher truth. |

Press Reviews
Tuesday, January 18, 2000.Sound VisionBy RUSSELL DEAN NEWMANStaff Writer Someday the evolutionary chart for recorded music might be something like this: LP, eight-track tape, cassette tape, CD, MP3.Chris Meyer, 25, a Chattanooga musician and member of the band, Soulbread, has seen the future of music marketing and it's spelled MP3, a popular format for conveying music via computer. Until recently, neither Soulbread nor its music strayed far from the Southeast. Now, with fans throughout the continent, and some in Australia and Japan, Soulbread has its first No. 1.The Internet site XXXXXXXX.com is where bands -- unknowns and stars alike -- can post biographical information and MP3 samples of their music. Listeners worldwide help determine the site's weekly charts in several genres through their votes. Several weeks ago, Soulbread's single "Break" spent two weeks at the top of Soundclick.com's rock chart, which is published in the College Music Journal, an industry magazine used by North American college and noncommercial radio stations. ___________The Times & Free Press on Friday, June 23, 2000. Variety Adds Spice to 'Soulbread'By BARRY COURTERAssociate Feature Editor SOULBREAD. "Soulbread." Local rock band Soulbread, with its self-titled full-length debut release, presents a solid CD filled with enough variety to satisfy every listener. From the grinding opening "Assimilate" to the quiet emotions of "Hold On," the trio proves again and again that variety is the spice. With this CD, Soulbread manages to pull listeners in and give them a 42-minute tour of the Soulbread world. John Crumbley and Chris Wilson provide the rock-solid rhythm section with enough fills and tricks to complement Chris Myer's strong guitar work and vocals. For a treat, check out the drum and bass work on "Break."One of the strongest aspects of this CD is the minimal use of effect in the production process. Although extra musicians are brought in on the tracks "Betrayed" and "Hold On," the overall sound is very similar to the band's live shows (which if you haven't seen them live yet, do so!). Almost none of the band's live raw energy has been sacrificed in the recording process. The strongest tracks on "Soulbread" are "Mad World," "Brother," and "Betrayed." However, this is one of those rare CDs where there is not a sleeper or filler song in the entire lineup. Each track feels like a natural progression and moves along nicely throughout.Soulbread's CD can be found at Media Play, CD City, Cat's Records, and Wherehouse Records beginning Saturday. It will be available at Black Dog Records, Grumpys and McKays on Monday. It can also be purchased online at www.soulbread.com. The next opportunities to catch Soulbread live (before they make it really big and charge $30 a ticket) are at the Free Choice Fest in Sweetwater, Tenn., this weekend, at the Masquerade in Atlanta on June 30, and the Cricket Pavilion on July 22 opening up for the band Stroke 9. _________________October 29, 1999. Soulbread Has Dream Come TrueBy Barry CourterColumnistThe tears that welled up in Chris Meyer's eyes were there from the sheer joy of the event, a moment he now dreams of repeating. It's a dream shared by thousands of musicians the world over.It is the thrill of playing before a nearly packed arena and having the crowd sing along with your songs and applaud wildly at the end of your set.The dream came true for the members of Soulbread a week ago Thursday when the local trio filled in as the opening act for Days of the New. Nearly 8,700 people -- there as part of a free concert/party thrown by WLMX-FM 105 -- showed up to hear the headliners. Soulbread was just the appetizer, and an impromptu one at that. How the band came to be on that stage is a classic right-place, right-time scenario. When Days of the New management called WLMX to say a local band was needed to fill a 30-minute hole in the band's set, program director Scott Hamilton called Chris Braly.Braly is the chief organizer of Chattanooga Independent Artists Music. Known as CIA, the organization is dedicated to promoting local musicians. He is also Soulbread's manager, so he did what any manager would have done. He pitched his guys."We were really scared and worried that people might boo or throw things," Braly said. "We were overwhelmed at the crowd's reaction."For Meyer, who is the group's singer and guitar player, the moment was even more meaningful. The other band members are Chris Wilson and John Crumbley."It was the best night of my life besides my son being born," he said. "Having that many people react to your songs is unbelievable."Meyer said the largest crowd the band has been in front of before last week was about 1,500 folks at last year's Halloween Jam at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo.The group will perform Saturday night for Halloween Jam '99 along with Kindergarten Bullys, Limousine, The Pleasantdales, Throttlebottom and The Unsatisfied. The party gets under way at about 8:20 and will last until 3 a.m. Prizes for costumes and a disc jockey will complete the evening. Proceeds benefit the Chattanooga Food Bank.Soulbread's concert last week meant more to the band than just a few cheers. Meyer said he has already gotten an endorsement out of the show and is in contact with other agents and company representatives."We made plenty of contacts that night. We threw out a bunch of those plastic balls like you see at McDonald's on the play area with www.soulbread.com on them. We've gotten the most hits (on the Web site) we've ever gotten since."One of the contacts Meyer made was Travis of Days of the New. "I told my wife, 'I'd love to be getting on that bus and going to the next one (show).' I got to hang with Travis and just sit around and talk. I got his numbers. Maybe we'll work together. Who knows?"Meyer is obviously excited about the opportunity his band received, but he unselfishly hopes it may be the break local bands need."With 91.5 (WAWL-FM) helping by playing local bands, and the CIA thing going, if one of us gets signed, it will help the others. That's how (music scenes in) Seattle and Atlanta started. Maybe it will bring some attention to the scene as a whole. I don't care who is first because I think there is a lot of great bands here. People just don't know about them." |
