Artist History
Jim Thorburn is a native to Southern California, the Mecca of the recording industry. He began playing piano at five years old. It became immediately clear that he had a special talent writing and playing keyboards.
At the age of 15, he was introduced to Deane Hagen. Deane is the son of the famed Earle Hagen. Deane became part of Jim’s high school band, “The Revelations.” Through the help of Deane and Earle, Jim recorded his first single with The Revelations on Capitol Records. Unfortunately, this was at the same time as the energy crisis of the 1970’s. Capitol Records cut back on all of their fledgling acts, including The Revelations, to conserve vinyl.
Also, during this time, Jim was introduced to Greg Venable, well known recording engineer and studio manager. Greg took a liking to Jim, and “showed him the ropes” of the recording industry. Jim would be found at Greg side at recording sessions for Tom Jones, Engelbert Humperdink, Ann Murray and many other artists.
Through this relationship Jim became acquainted with another fledgling pianist David Benoit. David became Jim’s mentor and friend. Through this association, David gave Jim his first name act gig as 2nd keyboards for Connie Stevens. David was Connie’s conductor at that time.
During this same period, Jim became actively involved with Day 5 Publishing, the Seals & Crofts publishing company. Through this association, Jim performed and/or recorded with Dash Crofts, Danny Deardorff, Maureen McGovern, Louie Shelton and Danny O’Keefe.
A&M Records, Latin Division, used Jim for recording and live performances for their platinum selling acts Antonio de Jesus and Sergio Fachelli.
Jim has also performed or recorded with Grant Geisman, Jamie Glaser, Lorraine Feather, Frank Carroll, Mark Guerrero, and Los Hermanos.
Jim wrote arrangements and conducted for the international OTI Festival – broadcast by UniVision in 60 countries.
Jim wrote the introductory theme along with Sergio Fachelli for “Mexico Estamos Contigo” – the international disaster relief fundraiser for the earthquake in Mexico City in 1986. The fundraiser earned over $20 Million Dollars.
Jim also co-wrote many songs with noted songwriter Larry Herbstritt (co-writer of “I Just Fall in Love Again – Ann Murray, “Spencer for Hire” theme)
Jim moved to Colorado in 1988. During this period he has played primarily with Jerry Barnett/Moments Notice Entertainment
