Artist History
Having known each other since early 1996 and sharing similar musical tastes, it was only a matter of time before a firm friendship was formed; and, before long, this meeting of minds was to lead them into working together in the studio. Back in '98, Mark's constructive input into developing the production techniques of the Served Chilled crew resulted in a debut release for them as Ice Minus on Tech Itch Recordings. During this time Bart also had several releases with Served Chilled on the Hard Leaders label, including the shocking double header 'Jacquera' and 'Airborne' and last year's experimental swan song for the label, the 'Red Fish' EP. Hard Leaders also released the devastating 'Zen' from Ice Minus - an Amen special indeed!! Mark Caro's history is already well known, with numerous releases as Technical Itch on labels such as Moving Shadow and Tech Itch Recordings, while also together with Darren Beale on the earlier Decoder projects. His debut album entitled 'Diagnostics' was also released last year on Moving Shadow to wild club and press reactions. Update (3-9 May '98) said: "Bristol's master of the tech step...Mark 'Tech Itch' Caro has developed a sound, and for that alone he deserves recognition. 'Diagnostics' has its place in drum & bass history. Tech-step at its most inventive." In the closing months of 1998 the Biostacis project was born. The initial tracks were completed within a matter of weeks and were well received by both the DJs who had received them on DAT, and clubbers throughout the drum n bass scene. With Mark's links with Moving Shadow, either this or Tech Itch Recordings was the obvious choice for the project; but in the end the tracks were sent to Moving Shadow and they were scheduled for release on the Audio Couture imprint. These two tracks were 'New Realm' and 'Flash Point', and they certainly caused a ruckus when they hit the streets. "Flash Point is a terrifying tune in all the right kind of ways. Hardcore nastiness carried off with flair and precision," said Knowledge (March / April 1999), while Mixmag (Feb. 1999) declared it "A promising debut". Bart's debut as Ice Minus on Audio Couture also made the right impression, with Muzik (July 1999) confident in their reckoning that "Ice Minus delivers his best yet..." The next instalment in the Biostacis story brings up nearly up to date, with the release of their second twelve, this time on Tech Itch Recordings. Both 'Gamma Ray' and 'Menace' continued in the same vein as their first release - busting out those hardcore vibes with intricate detail and a healthy dose of computer funk - with reactions from every corner of the globe surpassing all expectations. In the very near future, 'Menace' is also due to resurface, this time in the shape of a Dom & Roland remix. After a recent studio relocation Biostacis are back in 2000 with a new double pack entitled 'Biotactics', which is due out on Tech Itch Recordings in March. The EP will contain 'Tylenol', which Grooverider has already played twice on Radio One, 'DOS', 'Titanium' and 'Brain Hack'. 'Brain Hack' will also be featured on Dieselboy's next Mix CD for Moonshine, while Dara has licensed 'Menace' for his own Moonshine Mix Cd. |
