    Artist description
Coyote Project actually started as a brief ten piece experiment in late 1996 and early 1997(some of the roots of the band go much deeper, but in order to protect the guilty we won't go into that now). The original band had two keyboards, four guitars, three female singers... you get the picture. Sort of our own Rolling Thunder Review. In that incarnation we had the opportunity to open for groups such as Moe, Merle Sauders and God Street Wine. This ten piece experiment was short-lived however, and by mid-1997 we were a four piece acoustic act. In the autumn of 1998 we added bass and drums, bringing the band into its current form.

"Former Parlor Frog and LA Rambler Brad Boerger's newest effort, Coyote Project, a low-key sextet that's been playing area gigs recently, is creating a quiet buzz. Blending blues, folk and rock, Coyote Project has an ethereal, Sunday-morning sound that favors killing you softly to pounding you over the head. The band's down-to-earth stylings and strong original material make it a local group to watch. Boerger, joined by Parlor Frog guitarist Dave Leach, drummer Kent Clasen and bassist Kelly Furst, has been on the Lawrence music scene for years and remains an underrated contributor to local music. Coyote Project may help change that, although the concentration here is squarely on vocal dynamics, rather than Rambler-like forays into guitar outer space. Lead singer Erin Chambers' strong, heartfelt vocals glide over Coyote's lilting grooves, twisting and turning through a dusky musical landscape. Chambers is part Joni, part Janis--confident, but never overbearing, effortlessly harmonizing with ex-Parlor Frog guitarist Sue Malloy. The culmination of this harmonious majesty is found in "Lay This Woman," which has the two women mixing their voices beautifully, perfectly playing off each other. Though this CD is merely Coyote's three-song calling card, it heralds the coming of a much needed addition to the local scene, one that eschews contrived teen angst and trendy Caucasian pseudo-funk in favor of real songs painted on a broader, more worldly musical canvas. Paint on brothers and sisters, paint on." As reviewed by Geoff Harkness of THE MAG
