This nonsense started way back in 1991. Daryl was hosting a show at MUN Radio and a few of us were practiced in doing skits for the radio. This went back to 1987 to shows like Radio Frequency Overload, Guido's Humble Hideaway, and MUN-Lighting. Bill was setting up mikes in Studio A and after a epiphonous mike check, Marvin Chicken was born. A documentary tribute to a rock and roll chicken who died of Semonilla followed. Next thing you know, Audio Toon Theatre has a life of its own. Unfortunately for those of us who were there, ATT's Life was the consumption of its parts. ATT was reborn two years later as a duo and has largely continued to be a revolving cartel of friends. Our performances are a little different from past sketch shows you may have seen. We're not "off-book", no props, no costume changes. Just the Voice and what it has to work with it. This is how we do it. Less the late-nights and take-out chicken. But you never know, if we get hungry…

ARTS/ENTERTAINMENT Friday June 8, 2000THEATRE REVIEW - A Stand-up Show BY GORDON JONES / Special to The TelegramAudio Toon Theatre is radio sketch comedy without the radio. The set is a studio mock-up. Actors perform with scripts in hand before on-stage microphones, which are recording the show for editing and future broadcast. Boom microphones project over the audience to capture reaction. So this is radio for theatre, theatre for radio. The material is a grab-bag of personal, topical, cultural, political, religious and media skits, with a couple of songs from Sean Panting to vary the pace. It opens with a Mr. Dressup reprise (not part of my experiential baggage), followed by an interview at a federally funded institute conducting bizarre experiments on politicians and media personalities. This is followed in turn by a quick-fire piece on the Happy Caucus, an Ottawa store where federal politicians get their sex toys — Tory whips, fiscal restraints, and the whole parliamentary bag of tricks. Like most stand-up comedy there is some good, some bad, some indifferent. Shakespeare has to be there, of course, in the form of “out damned spot”. And so is Jesus Christ, dealing with a heckler in the Sermon on the Mount. Voice and interpretation are capably handled by the four performers. Neil Butler sometimes overprojects, not always remembering you can let the microphone do the work. Petrina Broniley, on the other hand, romances the mike as naturally as if she had been born in a broadcast booth. While the package will benefit from editing and sharpening for broadcast, it is nevertheless an entertaining and professional set of comedy and satire, performed with considerable verve. Written and performed by Russell Bowers, Bromley, Butler, and Sean Panting, with Bill Gregory behind the scrim as Bill the Announcer, Audio Toon Theatre is aired theatrically for the second and last time tonight at 8:30 p.m. at the LSPU Hall, running 90 minutes with intermission. If you miss it on Victoria Street, it is also scheduled for broadcast on MUN Radio’s CHMR - 93.5 FM - on June27 at 9 p.m.
