Artist History
The two founding members of Vice are Jason and Kelvin, a pair of Vancouver-born twins from Richmond, British Columbia. In May 2000, the brothers experimented with a song entitled Willow found in a publication of Othello by the Oxford School of Shakespeare. They wrote an accompaniment for the printed melody and lyrics and made their first recording with a microrecorder and keyboard. Only seventeen years of age at the time, Jason and Kelvin began to write original material, recording them in similar fashion. Kelvin composed all of the music, while Jason, the lead singer, wrote lyrics. In merely two months time, Kelvin discovered the ability to mix separately recorded tracks with the help of a wave editor. In the summer of 2000, Jason and Kelvin completed an EP consisting of reconstructed versions of previously recorded songs. Dale Wen of Hsinchu, Taiwan joined the band in August 2000, replacing Jason as the lead vocalist of the band. Since then, Dale has been working for Vice, sending her vocals via the internet while Kelvin continues his role as the main composer and mixer. Jason, instead, began to direct focus on lyric-writing, envisioning, and production. The first single from the Paper Crane album, "Car" marked the introduction of Dale as the lead vocalist. Never to favour up-tempo numbers, the music of Vice embraces sombre, steady, yet driving electronic facades laced with enigmatic messages. Exactly one year from the spawn of Vice, vocalist Evelyn Chung (Eve) of Vancouver joins the group.
