Artist History
It might surprise you to learn that Southern California-based rock band Death On Wednesday’s latest release, Songs To _____ To, wasn’t actually conceived for release at all. What originally started off as a small demo session tracked in a friend’s garage has turned into a full-blown EP release, complete with healthy production efforts by acclaimed producers and a trio of Grammy award-winning recording engineers.
After tracking demos began (following-up Death On Wednesday’s highly-successful debut full-length album Buying The Lie released November 2000 on SideCho Records), the band decided to enlist the production brilliance of Capitol Records A&R executive Loren Israel, whom they met via friend, tourmate, and Sugarcult frontman Tim Pagnotta.
With tracking completed, the band recruited Grammy award-winning mixing engineers Michael Rosen (AFI, Rancid, The Donnas) and Tone (Green Day), who finessed the sessions into their final, sparkling form. Following the successful mixing session, the band then headed for Hollywood’s famous Mastering Lab where yet another Grammy winner, Gavin Lurssen (Blink 182, the Living End) applied the finishing touches to the record. Not a bad way to cap off a session that was intended just to bang out a few demos.
The end result is the signature hook-laden, power-pop rock that Death On Wednesday has been perfecting since its inception in 1998. Scan through the tracks and you’ll notice the sheer variety of songs is readily apparent — for example, whereas most full-length albums might have an acoustic number, the six-song Songs To ___ To contains a pair.
Gutarist Jeff Saenz explains: “We’re definitely trying to convey an album like [The Rolling Stones’] Exile On Main Street or [The Clash’s] London Calling, where we could have a country song next to a pop song next to a punk rock song next to a rockabilly song, and it doesn’t matter because it’s one collective piece as opposed to ‘hit after hit’ of the same old song. We want to be recognized as songwriters.”
Although the band’s individual musical tastes and influences lie across a broad spectrum, singer Nate Lawler notes that, “the common ones are The Clash, The [Rolling] Stones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Misfits, The Beatles… the more obvious stuff.”
The band has another list of current acts with whom they’ve aligned themselves through touring, including the Reverend Horton Heat, Social Distortion, Dance Hall Crashers, Unwritten Law, and the aforementioned Sugarcult, all of which have definitely helped to shape Death On Wednesday’s live performance through years of constant performances to audiences nationwide.
Songs To ____ To also marks the first appearance for Death On Wednesday’s newest member, drummer Matt Rainwater, who joined after the band parted ways with their previous drummer, Jorma Vik. Rainwater was the band’s drum tech prior to performing in the ensemble, allowing Death On Wednesday to retain its integrity within its own unit. And unity is key, as it’s this common denominator of collective thought that’s helped maintain Death On Wednesday’s incredible musical course over the past few years. As the band will tell you, Songs To ____ To certainly highlights the band in it’s current state.
“It’s definitely representative of who the band is as a whole.” says drummer Matt Rainwater. Bassist Kevin Smith adds “We’ve maintained the same musical integrity, but I definitely think it’s a natural progression towards more of a rock n’ roll than a pop-punk kind of vibe.”
Furthermore, Death On Wednesday isn’t seeing Songs To ____ To as merely some stop-gap measure put in motion in an effort to fill the void for some proposed, forthcoming full-length on the horizon. In fact it’s unequivocally to the contrary, as Saenz emphatically explains.
“We’re treating this EP not only like it’s a full-length, but like it’s a double-album,” he says. “Our philosophy right now is to treat each album like it’s the last one, treat each show like it’s the last one. Just go out there and win one fan at a time, one city at a time.”

Press Reviews
"..shoots out like a sonic hypodermic from beat one, hitting me right between the eyes with a brilliant mix of old school meets new school. I'm thinking the energy of bands like Green day.. but crossed with The Get Up Kids and The Gun Club." - Ink 19 |
