Singer returns to his roots
Oceanside- Many recording artists like to talk about themselves, but Chil still freezes up.
Henry Gayle, who uses the stage name "Chil," hasn't had much time to "chil-out" lately. His solo CD, "U-B-6 I-B-9," made its debut last January. The Oceanside native had performed and toured with alternative bands since he was a teen at El Camino High School. He admits it is a little daunting to start over as a solo artist. "I just decided I wanted to break off. I was told I had a soulful, natural voice," Chil said. Not only is finding that voice challenging, Chil said, but so is refining a musical style, in his case, R&B reggae. Chil's style was appreciated by concert fans, at the Doheny Days Festival last month where he opened for the groups Shaggy, Big Mountain and General Public. The singer said he is very grateful to Makeda Dread, host of radio station 91X FM's Sunday night reggae show, "Reggae Makossa," for playing several of his songs from "U-B-6 I-B-9."
Lately Chil has been re-introducing himself to his hometown after performing away from the area during the past 15 years.
