Artist History
Charlie Elgart is the recipient of two gold records for his work as producer, arranger and keyboardist on the albums Najee's Theme and Day by Day by saxaphonist, Najee (Capitol/Manhattan/EMI). As a recording artist in his own right, Charlie released two critically acclaimed albums, Signs of Life and Balance (RCA/Novus) on which he acted as composer, producer, arranger and engineer, as well as playing all keyboards. While signed to RCA, he received corporate sponsorship from the Coor's Brewing Company and NY radio station CD101.9 for appearances at the South Street Seaport and the World Trade Center.Kelvin Ellis Sutton said of Balance in R&B Report, "My favorite, and the title track offers a series of emotions combining the finer elements of Jazz and New Age against a funky backdrop."Among the bands he has played in is the New York Fantasy Band (including Dave Valentin, Noel Pointer, Larry Coryell, Roy Ayers, Victor Baily, and Jeff Andrews.) Charlie was the in-house pianist for Caneel Bay resort on St. John in the US Virgin Islands for a year. He then relocated to Minneapolis where he became part of the local music scene, playing on numerous jingles and commercial films and videos. Charlie recently produced, engineered, and designed sound for a musical project, Addicted to the Process with jazz notable Craig Handy, saxaphonist in Herbie Hancock's touring band. It was debuted in Helsinki, Finland in 1999 and is described as soundscapes that create a unique blend of organic woodwinds, lush analog synth palates and urban grooves. This particular project was manifested from a lineage of jazz and various forms of electronica and had its beginnings in the mid-1980s with German-based Mack Goldsbury and percussionist Pete Tateo. Charlie has played concert hall venues, art galleries and performed an extended musical piece accompanying spoken word excerpts from the Tibetan Book of the Dead at NY's Danceteria.Friday Morning Quarterback (FMBQ) said of Charlie, "Elgart dishes out a whole spectrum of music, touching on various styles from funky groove-based fusion numbers, to Latin jazz to laid back vocal tracks."He is currently producing and playing on musical projects with a variety of artists in New York. |
