Artist History
How do you describe New Voices of Freedom and their original musical adventure, Rockspel? A vibrant, raucous collision of Rock, R&B, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae and Gospel which was introduced to the world in 1987 by the #1 Rock & Roll Choir in the World. Directed by gold/platinum award winning pianist, conductor, producer Dennis Bell, the choir was first heard doing their own version of U2's classic "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For". They were subsequently invited to U2's "Rattle & Hum" celebration at New York's Madison square Garden. The rest of that magical meeting is seen and heard in Paramount/Island's "U2, Rattle & Hum". Bono then asked them to cover U2's "The sweetest Thing" for the Bill Murray movie "Scrooged". from then on NVOF set out on their own, singing in venues that had
never seen or heard the likes of a choir before. From the China Club, The Lonestar, Wetlands, Delta 88 to Tramps in NYC to the Chameleon in Lancaster, Pa, they brought their unique style and message to the music world. Appearing in commercials, videos,
movies and guesting on other artist's albums from Lenny Kravitz to Sting to U2 to Aretha, NVOF
were and are a breath of fresh air to the New York area music scene in the late 80's and early 90's. Here then is their musical legacy...their debut album..."ROCKSPEL"!

More than 30 years ago Ray Charles became famous for incorporating the sound of gospel into pop music. These days the NVOF are taking the sounds of pop and incorporating them into gospel music. They call it Rockspel, and having appeared in the film "U2: Rattle and Hum" and performing with pop artists Peter Gabriel etc…, the NVOF are preparing for a performance this weekend in Lancaster.

…they do an amazing gospel version of "Thank You For Lettin’ Me Be Myself"…Even better is the way they take a sappy old soul tune like "ooh Child"… and invest it with the essence of gospel spirituality
Onstage were 25 voices, each of them good enough to front just about any rock band I’ve ever heard… …

They are an amazing group of energetic modern gospel singers..that defy any notion of what gospel singers are supposed to be. They’re young, they possess some of the most incerdible voices around today and THEY ROCK!

We shall always remember your contribution to the 25th memorial year of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner. You and we sent a message to our youth that the struggle for human and civil rights is now their struggle, left to them as a legacy from the many people who went before.
